I’ve also read the book which is even more intense

Oh yes ... that ending was just jaw dropping. 'Hunter Hunter'is another one with a similar shock at the end. Both very good films Edit ... Add 'Midsommer' to the list too. [Post edited 15 Jan 7:06]

I scrolled through to see if anyone had said it. A relentlessly sad film. One of my life's big embarrassments that I can never fix was I was on a train, going to my grandparents house. I'd watch Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Nausicaa and I was captivated. It was quite difficult to get hold of other films at the time. A Japanese lady spotted I had it in my hand on the train as I was getting off. "I can't believe you have this film", "it's amazing" and so on. With no context of the story, I said something along the lines of "I wish this was part of our culture" meaning the way of telling stories through that form of animation. She gave a perplexed look and I realised why when I watched the film. I watched it with my Grandad, Gran, and younger sister. All of us in tears. My Grandad had to leave. Too sad and too real for him. I always get embarrassed thinking back to saying that. Big +1 for Grave of the Fireflies

I saw it in the early 90s as a 15/16 year old - and it was the first real time I'd been exposed to or aware of the civil rights movement in the US and the KKK. Felt like I was being repeatedly punched in the guts. I now understand that there was a lot of criticism of it for artistic licence, but whether it was loosely based on real events or an absolute faithful reconstruction of events to me is immaterial. It probably had the single biggest impact on me and my personal values of anything I can recall.

I've only watched it one more time since I watched it the first time (about 10 years later, as a teenager) and it upset me just as much then. I'm quite surprised it hasn't been mentioned so far!

For me I think it was 'Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid' then 'The Man Who Would Be King' Most recent one was 'Late Night With The Devil' (Agree about 'Grave of the Fireflies' and 'When The Wind Blows') [Post edited 15 Jan 13:56]
