Sarmiento still being linked with Middlesbrough. 12:48 - Jan 14 with 893 viewsPinewoodblue

Not had many minutes in Italy. Missed one match through injury early December. Has been unused sub, or not even in match day , squad over last two months.

I love Sarmiento. Will forever be a hero for what he did here.

He is a very average player though, not sure he improves Boro.

I lost count a long time ago of how many times I've watched that winner against Southampton!!

Saw something on Twitter that said he’s only played 90 mins total this season. But imagine if he does sign for Boro, and has a 90+7 for them against us in April. That will surely trigger a new Banter Era. Gods would be unable to stop it .

Following on from the reports suggesting that Boro are going to be signing the ‘he’s magic you know’ Sarmiento I think that this is an interesting one because it shows something of what is and isn’t possible to achieve in terms of signings as a Championship team.

So to sign a player you have to have all of the following:-
* A club willing to sell to you;
* Have a squad place available;
* Be able to afford the transfer fee and wages;
* Have a player and their agent willing to sign for a Championship club.

So if we say all of those things have aligned and Sarmiento is willing to sign for a top 3 Championship club then should we ourselves have looked to sign Sarmiento?

For me personally I would say no because although he has slightly different qualities I don’t think that you could say he’s significantly better than what we already have in say Philogene, Clarke, Nunez and Szmodics.

And if we look at the deals done so far by Coventry and Middlesborough you have:-

Middlesborough:-
* Leo Castledine for Boro signed from Chelsea;
* and supposedly close to confirming Sarmiento from Brighton.

Coventry:-
* Romain Esse from Palace on loan;
* Yang Min-hyeok on loan from Tottenham after he was recalled having been on loan at Portsmouth for the first half of the season.

Looking across the entire Championship you have:-

* Preston - no signings yet.

* Millwall - no signings yet.

* Watford - no signings yet.

* Hull (still under a transfer embargo I think) - signed a 20 year old free agent defender after they were released by Leeds at the end of last season.

* Stoke - Gavin Bazunu from Southampton on loan.

* Wrexham - no signings yet.

* Bristol City - Morsy plus a 21 year old midfielder from West Ham on loan.

* QPR - Ronnie Edwards from Southampton.

* Leicester - no signings yet.

* Derby - a 22 year old Danish midfielder Oscar Fraulo from Borussia Monchengladbach for a compensation fee, thought to be between £250,000 and £350,000. Fraulo has played only 40 minutes of football across four league games for Gladbach this season.

* Birmingham - Kai Wagner a 28-year-old German left-back from MLS side Philadelphia Union for an undisclosed fee.

* Southampton - Daniel Peretz a 25 year old goalkeeper on loan from Bayern Munich.

* Sheffield United - after Patrick Bamford had been with them on a short term deal until January they’ve now signed him on an 18 month contract.

* Swansea - Joel Ward on a deal until the end of the season after Ward, 36, has been without a club since leaving Palace last summer.

* West Brom - no signings yet.

* Charlton - Harry Clarke on loan from us and there’s a bit of a rumour that they’re trying to get Lyndon Dykes from Birmingham.

* Blackburn - Eiran Cashin on loan until the end of the season from Brighton after he was recalled from Birmingham where he spent the first half of the season playing 11 times.

* Portsmouth - no signings yet.

* Norwich - Ali Ahmed a 25-year-old Canada international from MLS team Vancouver Whitecaps for an undisclosed fee.

* Oxford - Myles Peart-Harris a 23 year old signed from Brentford on a short-term contract until the end of the season. Plus Jamie Donley (Woolfie’s lookalike) a 21 year old midfielder on loan from Tottenham after he was recalled from a season long loan at Stoke where he made only 6 appearances.

* Sheffield Weds - no signings and I think that they’re under an embargo.

So to date 8 other Championship clubs have made no signing so far which is a third of the division.

And looking at the list of Championship signings so far who off the above list would we categorically want to ensure that we’re definitely signing better than we already have. Yes a lot of people would have welcomed back Morsy with open arms and Bamford can undoubtedly do a job in the Championship but it’s unlikely that he would have wanted to move away from Yorkshire.

Beyond that you can say that Sarmiento is a good player and also at Castledine for £1m looks like a decent prospect for the future based on what he did for Huddersfield on loan in the first half of the season but he’s unproven at Championship level and he’s a left winger so probably wouldn’t get much game time here due to Philogene and J Clarke.

I do think that we really need to calm down & be patient recognising that the club will be making a lot of effort behind the scenes trying to negotiate signings but without disclosing any of their targets to either the press or fans and rightly so until any deal is actually done.

Furthermore I don’t think we should be making signings for signings sake. We should be aiming for players who would truly improve the squad and if our A or B list targets aren’t available then I don’t want to see us trawling the C, D or E lists for players just to fill a squad place if they don’t actually help improve the team/squad.
