Mind, it's just been reported that ICE agents are moving into hotel/motels in the area, so feelings could change. |
You're literally Trump ground zero though. Floridians will be amongst the last to turn

what more should he do? he's already said greenland's future is up to denmark and greenland, and he's agreed to send troops there? as others have said, it's a tightrope to walk, keeping trump onside for ukraine, but making it clear that greenland's off the cards. i think he's saying the right things; i hope behind the scenes he's making plans to get closer to europe and other non banana-republics for trade and security

In fairness, he has just put out a statement. In equal fairness, it is weak. It is time to tell Trump clearly that he has crossed lines and that we are not going to bend over.

Frightening to think that we are still in the relatively early days of his second term. If he's still alive in 2029, there is no way that he will be giving up power peacefully, if at all. |
He will have Vance to take over and I really think he would be even worse!

| Trump ramping up his ‘mob boss’ act on Greenland today on 17:50 - Jan 17 by Churchman | You grovel to a bully, they’ll always come back for more. It’s always been that way and always will. Poor old Sir Kier has spent more than a year on his shiny knees with his nose between Trump’s sagging cheeks and the result? What we see today. It is unacceptable. This country should be moving away from the US as fast as possible, whether that takes months or many years. The trouble is Europe’s political and military weakness and the reluctance of the bigger players to accept the new reality and collectively do anything about it beyond in Starmer’s case getting a new pair of knee pads for Christmas. America is building its Empire!! From the tip of South America to the Arctic, including Canada will satisfy them. Im sure the average American is loving the excitement of it and sees no problem in stealing what isn’t theirs. |

Not being funny, if the US wants to make enemies of its former allies by extorting, bullying and stealing from them, why shouldn’t former allies seek new partnerships elsewhere, including China? |
Carney cut EV tariffs on China cars to 6.1% from 100%. A nice gesture towards Elon 😂

| Trump ramping up his ‘mob boss’ act on Greenland today on 18:28 - Jan 17 by gtsb1966 | What is the general consensus of Trump in the USA now. Are people turning against him or is he still as popular? |
He has been deeply unpopular for quite a while, but there isn't much that can be done if congress won't stand up to him. He has never actually been popular. He has his base that will support anything he does and then he has a grip on the party. Almost every member of the Republican party fears him and will only speak out against him on their way out of office. He fears the Epstein files and congress passed the release of them almost unanimously. That's his weak spot. I am of the opinion that everything that has played out since that passed is an attempt to divert the press' attention away from that story while they clean the files. It seems to be working. The stumbling block to getting him out is a 2/3s vote in the senate, which won't happen unless a significant number of Republican senators abandon him. Never say never, but that seems unlikely. That is how Nixon was ousted though. Again... the Epstein files seem the most likely path to that given that the party already voted against his wishes on the issue. Every day that they aren't released though, the administration is breaking the law and I have no idea how anyone can compel them to comply. The only lever of power that the Democrats can use is the budget. The president doesn't actually control the budget, even though he effectively does at present because the Republican congress is derelict in their duties. Trump is only going to get more unpopular though, as the public is quickly turning against ICE and a lot of people are going to lose their health insurance in the coming months. A number of Democrats caved during the last shutdown. Perhaps that won't happen the next time as his approval ratings continue to erode? He is trying to project strength. He kidnapped Maduro and proclaimed himself acting President of Venezuela, but he isn't running Venezuela. That would require an enormous occupation force. There is no benefit to the United States seizing their resources without a massive presence and massive investment, neither of which are feasible, so he just extorted half-a-billion dollars that he stuck in a Qatari bank. He is targeting Greenland because it is weak, it's a distraction, and he believes it will make him look strong. If NATO stands up to him, he doesn't really have a play here. The stronger the show of force against his ambitions, the less leverage he has. The country doesn't support his actions in Venezuela, they certainly won't support him sparking a war with NATO. That would trigger a lot of defections from his own caucus, which he can't afford. I don't understand why those with leverage continue to appease him. He is a mini Hitler marching into the Rhineland over and over again. He is constantly applying pressure to see what response he gets and if nobody stands up to him he will continue to steal whatever isn't nailed down. As long as he continues to get his way, he will inspire fear. Carney was not likely to win the election until Trump sparked a wave of Canadian nationalism and the voters turned out against his preferred candidate. There is a lesson to be learned there.

| Trump ramping up his ‘mob boss’ act on Greenland today on 17:17 - Jan 17 by TheBoyBlue | At what point does the world just say, "OK, you do your tariffs, we'll leave you out of it all?" Sure it would be rough and as usual it'll be the little guy that suffers, at least initially, but the world surely has to work towards a new world order that bypasses the US and gets by, rather than having tariffs hanging over it from these bullies for the next three years? |
The pain cuts both ways. The US people (and the poorest there) will suffer too. But the only way to beat a bully is to collectively stand up to them.

I think there’s also an element of not reducing ourselves to Trump’s level. Calm statesmanship and plenty of indifference is arguably the best way to play Trump (whilst making alternative plans furiously in the background). Trump get bored soon enough and move on to something else.

It may not be as strongly worded as Macron's but it isn't weak. It is clear that he strongly opposes Trump's stated plans. If Trump pursues them, the next step would be to cancel the King's visit and make it clear Trump has turned the US into our enemy. The clear isolation of the US has to hit home before too long. Surely, soaring prices of goods on the shelves won't be ignored by the US people.

"I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse, but if you refuse it, I'm going to make life much harder for my own crew so they like me less, that'll show you". He also still seems too utterly dense to realise that a tariff on individual EU member states doesn't work (obviously it hits us of course, still loving those Brexit benefits).

Time for a summit between UK and the other seven European nations under threat , plus EU and perhaps Canada to draw up a list of potential actions that can be taken should Trump carry out his tariff threats or invade Greenland. Worth remembering that Trump’s threats don’t always turn into actions. The list should cover all options including travel restrictions and closure of US bases in UK & Germany. It is always risky when you are dealing with someone as unpredictable as Dozy Donald he is just as likely to escalate as backdown. The more isolated the USA becomes the more likely Congress will strep in, there is of course the risk of another lockdown at the end of the month.
