Hirst 19:36 - Jan 17 with 2573 viewsleftback

I can’t believe how undervalued Hirst is by our supporters, I’ve seen very few strikers we’ve come against this season who occupy the CBs and press as well as he does. Granted his touch is not always perfect and he’s never going to be clinical.
It’s very easy to say if we had a clinical striker we could have won today by 6 or 7 but how about if Hirst doesn’t win the ball from the goal kick for our first goal taking their CB out of the game completely opening up space for Nunez then we don’t get the early goal and possibly struggle to break down a stubborn opposition, he does so much work for the team that goes unnoticed and under appreciated.
Certainly thought having him back as a focal point today contributed to our fast start

He’s a top 5 striker in this league (at worse) and I think Azon is probably in the top 15 or so too. There aren’t many better than him available at this level unfortunately. We can upgrade if we go up but just don’t think you can get them in our spot easily.

I havnt seen 4 better strikers than him tbis season… especially ones who fit our system.

If Hirst was playing for another side.. I dont think we'd be seeing posts saying we should sign him.. a post earlier on is quite right imo.. theres a lot of love there based on the promotion season rather than whats actually happened this season imo.

A reasonable sub option absolutely. But yes there will be better strikers out there. But its not our job to list them its the recruitment teams job to find them.

Thought he was excellent today, his best game all season.
It helped Blackburn pressed very high which created lots of space further up the field where Hirst could receive the ball one on one.
Before Christmas, I thought his touch was poor but today it was spot on.
Funny enough, I watched him shooting in the warm-up and he was superb. Definitely different to pre-Christmas where he was scuffing shots everywhere.
Games like today will lift his confidence, which is a good thing because we need Hirst for our system. Azon is a cameo striker against tiring legs in my opinion.
But that said, we still need another striker in this window.

The no. 9 position in a Kieran McKenna side has never been solely about scoring goals. Chaplin was our top scorer in L1 and the Championship. The way we play means goals are more likely to come from the 3 behind the striker.

Sorry but you surely can’t watch that game and say his touch was spot on for the duration?

Watching a different game to me today, he’s runs the channels and good press, which is his job but everytime he’s set free himself he looks so awkward can’t get his shot off.

Looks clumsy at times with his feet. Sometimes his touch and hold up is decent and others it’s poor. Azon was more of a handful that him and seems to get in more scoring positions (if only he could convert), also done the Hirst style job well to initially spring Cajuste for the third.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Hirst but it hasn’t been a great season considering he’s playing in a team with so much talent compared to the opposition as well, I would have been expecting a lot more from him.

If he did what you ask, he would be playing for a top premiership team

This is a different season and a different system. Weve created so many more chances and half chances than we did for our strikers in the previous seasons.

In promotion year. Hirst missed 10 clear cut chances all season. Hes already on 11 now. Azons on 12. Let alone the half chances created like today's when he was played in but didnt make the most of them.

I completely agree we score goals elsewhere. But 22 missed clear cut chances between two strikers is incredibly high with 4 months left to go.

I don’t think so, he missed a lot of chances first half of the season, his touch seems to have regressed and he looks awkward trying to sort his feet out half of the time. Stuff I didn’t see when he started playing at the end of last year. I thought he was in for a strong season but hasn’t really panned out like that. Done ok today but the OP is over the top.

George seems to struggle to get the ball under control quickly sometimes, especially if he's under pressure from a centre half, whereas Azon seems to be stronger and kills the ball stone dead but falls over too easily. When George is on his game, he's great and I'd still have him in the side ahead of Azon due to the latter's poor finishing. But neither is top drawer and we need to find an upgrade from somewhere

Ok not for the duration but for the large part I would say it was pretty good.
No player will ever have a faultless first touch in a game but it was certainly far better than pre-Christmas when he looked like he was built out of right angles.
He’s not been great this season, we all know that, but credit where it’s due, he held the ball up well today.
The only thing lacking was in the final third where he still looks short of confidence when presented with a chance and clearly doesn’t trust his left foot.
It’s all about opinions. When Hirst got his studs stuck in the second half, the guy behind me launched into one but I thought that was harsh given the general improvement in his performance.
But, like I say, we still need another striker because none of the current bunch look prolific.

I completely agree with everything you've said here. I can only assume that you, like me, were at PR today. Every time Hirst had an opportunity to shoot, it was on his weaker left foot, and he did the right thing in holding the ball up and laying it off to others.

We are going to go some to find a better CF for a Championship side than Hirst.

His touch isn’t always the best, his finishing isn’t Haaland’s levels, he’s not as strong as that monster bloke playing for Sunderland, he’s a bit injury prone.

With that out of the way, the positives. He is very mobile. He was moving the opposition CHs around yesterday and that allowed the likes of Nunez to get in behind. He’s a good team player that brings others into the game.

He might not be the strongest but he is combative and the markers always know they’ve been in a game. His positioning is good too. His control is actually ok. The ball didn’t always stick to him yesterday, but it’s not easy with defenders all over you when the ball arrives. He tried various things including playing the ball round the corner and caused them problems.

We are a better team with him in the side that without. He does a lot of unseen stuff which I bet the others appreciate. Is he the best CF we’ve ever had? Of course not, but he’s by no means the worst.

For a first game back I thought he did well yesterday. Hirst is a good, under appreciated player.

I felt it was a mixed bag in general from Hirst, but I'm more confident about us when he's playing. He never seems to have recovered mentally from the penalty miss at Middlesbrough.

I can’t believe how undervalued Hirst is by the refs. Granted his first touch is not the best and he does not use his body very good for a lad of his size in duels, but I don't think I've ever seen a player not given so many fouls on him, penalties included.
