| Why have our recent transfer windows become so difficult to endure? 20:50 - Jan 21 with 3166 views | trueblue85 | No reasonable supporter expects unlimited spending or the easy acquisition of top players, but it does raise questions about what has changed at PR to make the process feel so painfully drawn out and frustrating. Am I the only one that currently has the same observation? | | | | |

| Why have our recent transfer windows become so difficult to endure? on 07:37 - Jan 22 with 807 views | SheffordBlue | I think the main thing that has changed is our position relative to our targets. When we were in League One we were paying better wages than most and had the money to be at the front of the queue for deals. We also had a weak squad so it was relatively easy to buy in improvements. We're now in a different place in the pecking order in relation to players who will markedly improve our squad and we're often reliant on Prem clubs doing their own deals before players we are after become available. We could be buying in young, talent from elsewhere but as we've seen with Sindre there's no guarantee that they'll hit the ground running. There have been a few studies that reckon that only between 40-50% of transfer deals work out for the buying club i.e. there are lots of players bought who don't make the difference the buying club wanted. It would be really easy to spend a lot of money and end up with players on high wages who just don't make much of a difference. | |

Yes, and we haven't replaced him over thr whole summer, or currently this window. And prior to Delap who did we have that scored regularly?

That photo of Stephen Ward, Cornell and some other sh*tter who I can't even remember holding their shirts up as one. The bi-yearly 'Quiet Deadline Day Expected' TWTD post. Having to get excited over signing the likes of Keanan Bennetts thinking they might be half decent. Selling players for a fraction of the price they are worth. Replacing Daryl Murphy with Leon Best. Now that, my friend, is difficult to endure. [Post edited 21 Jan 20:54]

Show some respect to Ollie Hawkins mate. The best Striker/Centre back since Naylor.

Chaplin scored the best part of 40 goals across 2 seasons. I'm not desperate to sign a striker, what I would like is more goals from our right hand side. [Post edited 22 Jan 8:29]

| Why have our recent transfer windows become so difficult to endure? on 01:42 - Jan 22 by RetroBlue | I read all the comments above and think, yip youre right, yip, thats a fair comment, but the stark truth is we are still looking for a striker that can score goals regularly. Yes every club's looking for one of those. But every window, it seems, we are looking for a striker with those attributes, yet seem no nearer to getting one. They are the most expensive player ( usually), for a reason, yet despute our extensive spending, we seem to rely on loanees ( arguablly all ineffective to date in this current squad) , for arguably our most expensive outlay / position. Like it or not, Id suggest Ashtons ability to get one over line in the next 2 weeks is the difference between promotion and no promotion. |
But are we "still looking for a striker that can score goals regularly." ? Second highest scorers in the league without one. KM doesn't prioritise goals from his striker and never has. it worked out ok so far.

Chaplin, Broadhead, Hutchinson. We don’t play a system that expects a sh1t-load of goals from the no.9. And we’re beginning to see players in similar positions contribute similarly this season. At the current rate Clark & Philogene will outscore those 3 this season. Sure, if we got the chance to get another Delap-like no.9, that’s perfect, but we absolutely do not need it to score goals, and get promoted (all of course just imho)

Prior to Delap, scoring wasn’t exactly a problem for the previous two seasons. Gamechanger had brought in Hirst, who fitted how we play and Moore, who wasn’t good enough for the Premier so was never going to be retained. My view is that it has taken months for this side to start realising its potential - as is usual for any form of team. Yes, there are exceptions like the Mackems but the exception proves the rule. As others have said, we are fishing in a different pond to the days of Cokey, MuglessDouglas, Duke I ate myself here Ellington, on the lash Jimmy, dear old Frank Nouble and the likes. It’s known we have money and the kind of player we are after has choices and if we are to bring people in they have to have Premier League potential. We have a big squad. I’d love to see another CF, but the likelihood is unless he’s from abroad, it isn’t going to happen. A right fullback would be nice too as Clarke is gone. We’ve had enough churn and change and I’ve seen enough in the last nine games to suggest that we are gradually becoming unplayable and most importantly can find a way to win if not playing well. They are looking more of a team and less a load of individuals. Within that the quality of the players themselves is higher than two years ago overall. Daft though it sounds, a fit and willing Conor Chaplin in the squad would do me. He knows the system, works well with the likes of Hirst and scores goals. But it’s up to him. So overall, my approach, as always with transfers, is time around. As for the lack of rumours and noise, I find that refreshing.

It's almost like goal scoring strikers who have a good enough all round game to fit our way of playing don't grow on trees and are rarely available at a price we can afford.

We got in Azon and Akpom (who’d played about half his football as a striker) so went from having 2 number 9s to having 2.5 number 9s. As for the goal scoring bit, strikers don’t come with a sign on their heads saying ‘this one will definitely score goals for you’. It’s always a punt. And besides, we’ve more than got goals covered through our other forwards/wingers. The squad’s on ridiculously good shape for the Championship imo.

| Why have our recent transfer windows become so difficult to endure? on 09:37 - Jan 22 with 603 views | OldFart71 | Unfortunately nothing is guaranteed. you only have to look at the case of liverpool who paid over £100 million for a player that hadn't scored the goals expected, then we he got one broke his leg in the process. Town are in a good position, no doubt with a far better start we would be top two. Nonetheless we are in a great position, We could do with a player to cover Matusiwa, but to get someone in who is on a par and prepared to play second fiddle will be extremely difficult to sell to that player. I suppose Cairney would have been ideal, but why drop a division when you are getting some game time in the prem ? A definite number 10 would be good, but then where does Nunez then fit in. Personally I think it may be a couple of loan players rather than a purchase as if it didn't work out that we got promoted we wouldn't then be left with an expensive player and diminishing parachute payments, although the second season is only some 10% less. | | | |

And most sides at this level would bite your hand off to have Azon and Akpom as their back up options at this level. I do think Azon is improving all the time, lord knows he could do with a goal or two but he's had some really bad luck on that front, as well as some not great finishing. As a team we aren't struggling for goals and that's what really matters. Of course we'd all like a Prem ready number 9 but getting one in January is going to be a big ask. If we only ended up with cover for Matusiwa this window I'd still feel confident about our chances over the rest of the season.

| Why have our recent transfer windows become so difficult to endure? on 09:52 - Jan 22 with 558 views | baxterbasics | The way things are going now, a high scoring striker is a nice-to-have, not an essential. Enough goals are coming from other positions. Plus Azon may start getting more joy at the goalmouth, Hirst may yet hit some form. If we don't sign one we hopefully have enough in our arsenal to get over the line. Not finding capable CM cover would be a bigger worry - think we'd then need a bit of good fortune with injuries and suspensions. | |

I’d like a cm too but only an absolute gun like Hackney. If it’s gonna be some bench warmer from the Prem I’d rather we stick with what we have.

| Why have our recent transfer windows become so difficult to endure? on 11:02 - Jan 22 with 464 views | Smoresy | I find it much easier to switch off during the winter window when there's football to play. We're also winning so much it's hard to focus. Do we need to improve X starting position this window? The evidence isn't very compelling; we're motoring along! We should need to continue as we are, which means coping with absentees, which means at least a CM reinforcement of good quality, and for us to not be at the mercy of Nunez's durability. I think it's likely Azor will reach his suspension at the weekend, given we're away to a strong team with tricky players in the centre, like 0'Hare. It will come soon surely and will pose a good test. | | | |
| Why have our recent transfer windows become so difficult to endure? on 11:24 - Jan 22 with 430 views | HighgateBlue | I don't believe they are difficult to endure. Unless one has unreasonable expectations. I think they are increasingly difficult to succeed in for a few reasons: (i) we are better than we used to be (hooray!) which means there is a smaller pool of talent that is better than what we have (ii) because of FFP, even rich owners cannot just buy their way out of difficulties in an unrestricted way. That means that the status of the club has an even bigger part to play than before. Players leave mid-table prem teams for European chances, players go to mis-table prem teams rather than relegation bound prem teams or champ clubs, even if the latter are not impoverished. We are in the Champ, but we want players of Prem quality. That is just so hard to do, without taking a punt on a young player who may not be the next big thing after all, or a has been who may not re-conjure glory days (iii) perhaps the only way to negate the above is to get glorious value from overseas. To do that, our scouting network needs developing. I am not the biggest Evans-basher, but plainly our scouting network had withered on the Evans vine. I can completely understand that developing a winning scouting network can't happen overnight. So on that point at least, whilst I find it very hard to have patience in any area of life, I appreciate we must be patient. Everyone loves a bit of transfer gossip. Everyone loves a shiny new striker signing. Come May, is there anyone who will sulk in the corner whilst the others celebrate promotion, on the grounds that we didn't buy anyone in January? If we'd lost the first 4 games of the transfer window, anxiety and unrest would be justified. But we won them. It would give me greater pleasure for Wes Burns to score the goal that gets us to the Prem than even Lionel Messi. So let's be sanguine. Alternatively, let's buy everyone targeted by Boro. They're getting too hard to shake off! And I see they're in for a J.Sarmiento. Let's hope he's lost his wand! | | | |
