| Sir Dim needs to have a look at where his income is coming from 18:44 - Feb 11 with 8435 views | Plums | Of course, he isn't talking about the sort of immigrants that are playing for his club or those that are paying huge sums to watch it. It'll be the 'other sort' I hope he gets the backlash he deserves for this. https://news.sky.com/story/the | |

He’s a major share owner of one of the biggest football clubs in the country and all coverage of his comments feature condemnation from various Manchester United supporter groups. Maybe wind your neck in, and turn your caps lock off, looks a bit simple.

The use of the word colonised is deliberate and disgusting. Just another step along the way towards abuse towards all non white brits being fair game. This country is heading to a dark place.

| POST ON THE OTHER SECTION. on 21:52 - Feb 11 by Plums | This is in the correct section. He's the owner of one of the world's largest football clubs and if you actually bother to read my post you will see I specifically referred to their players and fans. Sorry you don't like it but I object to being referred to as an idiot. Go and use your angry caps somewhere else. |
Wrong section. It's clearly a political post.

Do you want to complain to Sky too? SSN is now featuring it as he is heavily involved in Man Utd, fans groups have responded, Kick It Out has felt the need to comment, and they are now discussing the impact on players too. Would you say that anything controversial and clearly racist posted by anyone involved with ITFC would absolutely belong on the football section on here?

Can you give me an example of how an "illegal" sponges of [sic] the tax paying workers off [sic] this once great country? And then begin to unpack why this country is no longer great (clue it isn't because it has been bled dry by "illegals").

Plus he said the UK has been colonised by immigrants. He did not reference "illegals" whatever they are. It is remarkable that so many immigrants and descendants of immigrants are decrying immigration without any sense of irony. What do you actually think "colonised by immigrants" really means?

Is that an admission that you can't answer my points? Let me summarise them again. What do YOU mean by an illegal (which to me is a horrible offensive and unthinking term picked from the extreme right to demonise all immigrants)? The very fact you are equating Ratcliffe's comments about immigrants as meaning illegals suggests that you are equating the two. What do you think is causing the UK's regression? How?

It's very telling that people who say the things you have never actually respond with evidence when they are asked for it. Instead we get "head in the sand moment" nonsense. It's frustrating, debate is dying, soundbites and feelings are overtaking reasoning and evidence. SB

Karveh Solhekol is now debunking his lies. The UK population has gone up by 12 million since 2000 when the actual figure from the ONS is 3 million. That is population growth not immigration. Kick It Out's statement says "Sir Jim Ratcliffe's comments are "disgraceful" and "this type of language and leadership has no place in English football""

Maybe I’m naive here, but wouldn’t it be better to consider the actual words he said, rather than the ones you’ve imagined in your head? He was lying. That’s all there is to it. Not ‘oh well, he obviously didn’t mean immigrants when he said immigrants”. But I can see he’s reached his target audience.

He isn't. But people do. I think it is important that those who promote the demonisation of immigrants are challenged to support their claims. It is the only way we can hope that the extremism can be properly rooted out. Leaving it unchallenged won't. Screaming abuse or simply replying with "you've got your head buried in the sand" won't. If we are to avoid the march into fascism, we need to stand up for those we don't identify with ourselves. For me, that is immigrants amongst others.

True. Is not a tactic of ignoring the idiot and denying him the oxygen of publicity a fair tactic? Not going to happen. I find it all a little bewildering. As has been pointed out, most peoples’ ancestors came from somewhere else (if not all). My guess is some of mine rocked over with the Anglo Saxons (6c) and others with the Norman invasion 1066. I did one of those ancestry DNA things the other week and that might give me a clue - but only from a curiosity point of view. The more odd the better! People are people. Take it beyond that simple phrase and we head down a very dark path to what’s been seen far too many times throughout history and of course now. And that’s something I have never accepted and never will [Post edited 11 Feb 23:36]

big story on the bbc football website. where should we put stories on football referees suffering homophobic attacks? ipswich players wearing or not wearing rainbow laces? leicester getting a points deduction? player's choice of boots? if sir dim wasn't a football chairman, it wouldn't be as big a story

Talking about challenging, Sky News were piss poor in that interview. Not one untruth out of several was challenged. It’s a continuing failure of journalism that we’re becoming used to. He was wrong about population growth He was wrong about the rate and numbers of immigration growth He was wrong about the number of people on benefits He was wrong about the number of immigrants in benefits He was wrong that Labour weren’t addressing immigration numbers He didn’t actually get actually anything right in terms of the figures or overall conclusions he was throwing out. He was wildly out in most cases. I’m trying to think if there was a valid point anywhere in what he said. I’m struggling. He was even wrong when saying Starmer was too nice to do difficult things that would make him unpopular! Has he checked Starmer’s rating lately? It sounds like he has absolutely no idea what’s happening in the UK and is just parroting whatever balls Farage told him. How do these people manage to run businesses (albeit extremely badly in Man U’s case)?

As you say, he is given oxygen by our media. If we don't engage his comments are accepted unchallenged. Maybe they will be accepted by many regardless but I cannot in good faith leave them unchallenged. Martin Niemoller's words ring far too true. The one lesson of history is that we never learn the lessons of history. It may not repeat but it rhymes. The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do (or say) nothing. Miguel Delaney (an Irish immigrant to the UK and a reporter) has just made the point that Ratcliffe's comments are about the families of Manchester United's players. Much as in the minds of the one on here shouting "illegals" they aren't who they mean. But they are. They really are. That's why I want the one shouting "illegals" to say what they actually mean and then to make the connections that it isn't immigrants who are damaging the country. They are a convenient scapegoat for those who really are.

To be fair on whoever did the interview at the time, I doubt they had the information to hand to fact check it. That was the tactic of the Brexit campaign - release an inflammatory statement based around falsehoods and exaggerations just before prime time news. By the time it was fact-checked and challenged, the message they wanted was already widely received. As I said, Karveh Solhekol was making the corrections on SSN late this evening. As for what he was right about ... he did say he was prepared to take the tough and unpopular decisions when running Man Utd.
