Mcateer is rubbish, an assist last game hasn't changed that. No quality on the ball whatsoever. Think he can only be effective coming on when gaps are opening because ball to feet he is woeful, first touch miscontrol second touch run straight into the full back.

I don't think he's good enough despite everyone being desperate for him to prove he was worth 12 mill
He's 24 and still doing what he's done all career, receive the ball out wide and either pass it against the fullback or run straight into him. Clueless when one on one with a defender, it's not a good trait for a winger to have. It's not his fault he just lacks ability on the ball.
On the other hand, he has the workrate and physicality to make a good full back. | | | |

Mcateer has some qualities comparable to Wes strengths which is why they get compared but Wes is far superior at the basics of football.
I just don't think you can play a pure athlete with very little football ability on the wing which is ultimately a flair position. You get away with it at full back and I think he will be converted to a full back eventually [Post edited 13 Feb 21:46]

Its not even his end product, where people are correct in saying that he could have had more assists, but the general contribution. Never ever ever beats a man, so many moves break down when the ball goes to him, even when he does retain possession he needs about 7 touches to manoeuvre himself into position to pass a simple ball inside slowing down the move. He doesn't seem to have the ball under control a lot of the time. He's always been this way and at 24 years old he's not suddenly going to magically develop technical ability. You've obviously got an agenda, like a few who visit this site, can't wait for a particular player to have what they see as a poor game. Yep, he didn't set the world alight, but was better than 2/3 I could immediately think of. Would have helped if he was played as he should be played. Kept wide, given the ball to feet or in front of him and just tell him to go. Few full backs will keep up with him. Instead he finds himself spending large portions of the match inside, with Ben Johnson, who has nothing like the pace almost acting as the wide right player. That must have been planned, god knows why, it was foolish. Que next player up on the scapegoat conveyor belt. I think I can guess that one. | | | |
