George Hirst only a handful of games to make an impression 13:58 - Feb 14 with 1355 viewsPinewoodblue

If he is ambitious he will want to represent Scotland in this summers World Cup.

His only chance is to achieve a lot more in the next 6 games than he has recently. If he isn’t in Steve Clark’s mind before he announces his squad it will likely be too late.

We could do with you firing on all cylinders.

Hmmm if I’m honest I think that boat has sailed for him sadly. His only hope would be to dislodge Lyndon Dyke’s place in the squad, but he seems to be a bit of a cult favourite for the Scots. I reckon Hirst will make the initial long list, then be dropped for the actual competition.

On current form he doesn't stand a chance. Not one part of his game is good enough. The George Hirst of 23/ 24 or even last year in the PL would be a dead cert but sadly he is a million miles from that right now.

But he has a chance to put that right.

I dont usually like to single out players but there are at least 5 players consistently below the level we expect and require to maintain a promotion push, it doesn’t mean we should vilify them or abandon them but we should ask questions not only of them, but of the environment they are training in and how they are being coached. Its beyond a period of poor form and its not only one player, several players, we need more from them to the end of the season and its in all our interests they show up or are helped to show up.

Hirsty is a nearly man. One good half a season in league 1. Played up to Xmas in the championship the year after, without pulling any trees up,then got injured. Big Keifer got us over the line(still baffles me why we didn’t keep him). Hardly played in the PL because we had better in Delap. This season was meant to be his season and he has been very poor, not sure why, but it just hasn’t worked for him.

God help us if he starts many of the next 6 games....

Sadly he looks absolutely shot. At the moment we don’t have any forwards in form and scoring so we are completely reliant on goals from wider players. Hoping things improve for Hirsty.

Dykes and Adams are on the plane barring injury. They've long secured the manager's loyalty and trust. That wasn't a critical hit for Hirst's prospects though because Clarke could well pick four (his past preference I think).

George looked to have risen to #3 in the pecking order by last season's end but Shankland has since supplanted him, if appearances are a reliable barometer, and then you have Tommy Conway too, starting and now scoring for Boro. A really difficult time to suffer such a collapse in form.

Why the hell are you worrying about George Hirst not getting in the Scottish squad? He's not even Scottish anyway. Just let him do his job here... control a few more balls, connect with a few more crosses.. who cares about his sketchy international career?

can we show him some love. He looks like a broken man and that's partly down to us fans. He had two golden chances on Friday night. Let's get behind all the lads and help us get promoted. Why do you think Wrexham are doing so well.

They’ll be home before the postcards anyway.

I think George's time has finally come now, sadly. I fully expect him to be moved on in the summer (along with Akpom, and Azon).

Being handed the captaincy in a now often viewed as , unimportant cup game, was in my view a simple gesture of " thanks for all you've done," but we will not be needing your services going forward, good bye, and good luck.

We shall in the summer, won't we.

Because they scored one of their golden chances.

As mckenna himself said. The players know what they need to do for the fans to love them.

Missing 16 clear cut chances is not gonna do that.

People have banged the confidence drum for 7 months now. Its gone on far to long and hes not looking like he can turn the tide on it.

Maybe injuries have reduced his ability as a footballer. Thats ok. It happens in football. We just need imo KM to realise that and move on.

I can't shake the memory that Hirst stepped up as a scorer in the PL. It was a small sample size admittedly but contained a delightful finish or two, a high proportion of shots on target. I'd volunteer that body of work as his most impressive to date.

If this is the natural consequence of injuries built up over his career, and his last serious absence came at the back end of last year, it would be quite damning for our medical team and decision-makers. I write that because we penned a 4-year extension maybe seven months after he'd recovered from his last injury. We should have seen it in his various monitors, on the pitch, on the training ground. I hope to God that isn't the reality.

His form has progressively worsened over the season imo, rather than being bad but static. See your points about length of time and turning the tide, right now it's looking really difficult. I'd suggest he has form for crises like these across his career, though. Prior to joining us, he'd racked up around forty Championship appearances without scoring a goal and was arguably at similar depths of despair among Blackburn fans. But he started well for us and was quickly a new man, thriving with confidence.

Resurrecting yourself at the same club is a different task mind and I'm sure we're mostly pretty worried about the situation (of those who want him to continue being successful here). I do wonder if, like Szmodics, he'd benefit from a run in a side that's granted more space higher up the pitch than we typically are.
