Only 1 at the moment. Gerald R Ford is being deployed, but was last in the Carribbean so won't be near Iran for a while.
I mean 1 US Carrier taskforce would probably be sufficient to take on Iran, but it's nowhere near 1/3rd of the USN's strength. |  | | |

US currently have 11 nuclear aircraft carriers but typically only 5 or 6 will be on deployment.
So the statement is probably more or less correct.
They don’t need the aircraft from a second carrier to carry out an attack but it seems wise to form one super carrier group as it doubles defensive capability.
Iran probably have the ability to sink or seriously damage US ships, it wouldn’t be good for the US, nor Trump, to be shown not to be invincible. |  |

5 or 6 on deployment, but another couple at least will be ready-able in 24-48 hours. the other 5/6 aren't all in drydocks.
As for aircraft, a single taskforce, is far stronger than the entire Iranian which is effectively a rusting set of museum pieces, some of which will be starved of spare parts. Only reason for more ships is better protection against other threats like missiles and drones. Even then I think it's overkill. | | | |

It could be a bluff to get some concessions, but I think you get that many toys in place, Trump would like to blow up some Nuclear facilities, Revolutionary Guards HQs and some S300/S400 batteries first.
Ridiculous fact, the US Airforce is the largest in the world by far and that their nearest competitor is the US Navy. Also the US Marine Corp are also in the top 5. This is still just a tiny part of their airpower. | | | |
