| Returning UK nationals from UAE 12:51 - Mar 2 with 5214 views | le2blue | See that limited flights have restarted from Abu Dhabi, and mass repatriation is being planned for UK nationals returning from the Middle East. For those tax exiles, I trust that we're deploying HMRC to recover funds. They should also be asked to make social media posts about how grateful they are to be home! [Post edited 2 Mar 12:54]

I'd happily live in any other expat destination, or even the type of far-flung places that Graham Greene used to write about, because at least they have some sort of historic culture. I did 3 months in Dubai in 2011, didn't have a choice, my company evacuated me there after death threats in Lagos. Had uncovered a fraud and the guy was well connected. Found it utterly soulless and the displays of wealth really vulgar tbh. After 2 weeks was pining for Nigerian chaos, genuinely. Each to their own but I'll never return for more than a flight connection. And yep, my taxes were very much paid - it was attempts to defraud the Nigerian tax office that I'd uncovered...

some of these people will be - holiday makers - transiting through dubia airport from other locations - people over there for a 2-5 day work trip Should they be the butt of this "joke" ? and lets not forget the brits who have moved there after years of paying into this countries tax system. hardly like they'll return here and sit in groups in a town centre, making women feel uncomfortable, just taking from the system with no intention of putting anything in. but i guess that wont be a popular thing to say on here, having read the posts on this thread. Me neither, largely because of the sterile nature of the newer places (same as Vegas, which I found exceedingly dull and tacky). I’ve not spent much time in the Middle East though, so can’t really comment. I have spent a bit of time in Abu Dhabi - some of the older architecture is amazing. The Sheikh Zayed mosque is a humbling experience and the old town was well worth getting lost in. Expat compounds and 6 star hotels would just remind me of business trips. I prefer to get lost, dirty and smelly when I’m on holiday!

"hardly like they'll return here and sit in groups in a town centre, making women feel uncomfortable, just taking from the system with no intention of putting anything in" Why worry that people might think you're a racist prick when you can remove all doubt eh. For clarity, yes I think you're a racist prick.

seems a hell of a jump considering we've not spoken on here previously i dont think. Whilst on that, you are aware not all asylum seekers are of colour, arent you? to assume they are seems a little, well, racist to me. and really, is it racist to say many asylum seekers have no intention of doing nothing but sponging off a system? no dont think it is. "is it racist to say many asylum seekers have no intention of doing nothing but sponging off a system?" It's probably not racist but it's pig shit thick levels of ignorance. Asylum seekers can't claim benefits, they get given a tiny allowance to cover essentials like food and toiletries while their claim is being processed. If their claim is successful and they are given leave to remain then they have no recourse to public funds, so they can't "sponge" and claim benefits because they are not entitled to do so.

| Returning UK nationals from UAE on 22:46 - Mar 2 by JackNorthStand | You believe it’s a moral arguement, to leave British people stranded in the Middle East as war is breaking out? You have then mentioned tax being the basis in which the decision should be made. So would a wealthy person who pays substantial tax in the UK and is visiting the Middle East for a business meeting be allowed assistance to return back to the UK, but a person who works as cabin crew for emirates and is based out of Dubai and not paying tax not be entitled to assistance? There is no logic in what you have said. |
Shouldn't they be staying to fight to defend the countries that they've chosen to live in?

When I read the stop in the first safe country comment, I assumed it to be unserious, a joke and a bit of irony to echo the entirely serious and repetitive parroting of that comment relating to other people heading to this country. I don’t think it’s a pop at anyone you’re talking about in your response either. And you know what, I reckon you know all of this already.

And then once they are accepted and integrated, several studies have shown they tend to be net financial contributors (although the employment rate after a couple of years post granting of asylum is still slightly down on the UK average but not by much).

I agree having spent a lot of time there in the last few years. I understand the appeal but it's not for me. I don't like the traffic, you can't walk anywhere and to state the obvious it's quite warm a lot of the time! I would say though that if you are looking for historic culture - you should visit Oman. It is an amazing place and right on the doorstep. Abu Dhabi and the great Mosque etc are also a sight to see.

That’s a pretty poor post imo, despite your claims it’s not informed by racism. Maybe it isn’t, but you’re certainly stereotyping and demonising asylum seekers using language similar to that which racists use.
