It feels like tonight is a really important game 08:25 - Mar 3 with 629 viewsVic

We (and others) talk a lot about about the quality and depth of our squad - so it's humbling to accept that we're clearly not clear favourites for a top two end of season spot. And it's humbling that teams like Millwall and Hull are our equals in terms of points and aren't yet showing signs of falling away and leaving us alone.

Any points dropped tonight will see a hard job get harder - not only in terms of points available but in confidence s we get into the business end of the season. At the same time points won will likely have the opposite effect on Hull.

Put simply - a win tonight would be huge!

This isnt a must win, but this and Boro feel as near to that as we'll get at this stage.

It is an important game, but at this point of the season, they all are, not just for us.

Dropped points at this stage are more difficult to recover, if ever there was a time to go on a good run, it's now.

My biggest concern at this stage of the season is that IF we are resigned to the PO's that we hit them with some form and or consistency

The amount of times we've seen over the years a team scrape into the PO's because they are / were the form team and knock out the "favourites"

I've no issue we can beat anyone in this league over two games but against the FORM team , history tells us it's a lot harder

It the most ‘must win’ since the last ‘must win’ but less of a ‘must win’ than the next ‘must win’.

Yeah, it’s a biggie for points and moral/keeping up the pace.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

My strong playoffs memory is of teams sneaking in near the last day of the season, to then breeze past the crestfallen automatics hopeful and triumph at Wembley. But our own experiences are distorting the picture really, when we saw Palace and then West Ham do it in the short spell after relegation, before the playoffs lost relevance to us. Since that West Ham debacle in 2005, 6th place has had a poor time of it. Blackpool in 2010, the last to win from there.

Past 20 years summary:

3rd: 17 finals, 9 wins
4th: 12 finals, 6 wins
5th: 8 finals, 4 wins
6th: 3 finals, 1 win

The form position though is 4th, with 4 wins out of 6. Let's play it safe and go for 4th. 🤪

Might not want to hear it, but that Middlesbrough result at Birmingham last night was a terrific result for them. That really puts added pressure on our shoulders to keep winning. Yes, we have got games in hand, but I’d prefer points on the board at this stage in the season. Hull City will be a big test for us, really hope it’s one of those performances where we start on the front foot with real intent from the first whistle.

Millwall are in the bottom 6 with their wage bill in the Championship. Hull City were a lot of people’s favourites for relegation before the season started. It’s a funny old game!!

Interesting numbers, and demonstrates very clearly that some of the common tropes around the playoffs are nonsense. Having said that, I would still feel more nervous about facing an in-form Southampton than the likes of Hull or Millwall.

Quite agree - so tonight is massive, psychologically as much as anything. A win hould give us good confidence going into the business end, and, should we fall short of the auto's it will give us the edge if we play them in the P/O's
