Interestingly both parties have a loose connection to the Goldsmith family.

Teddy Goldsmith, one of the most influential pioneers of the green movement, was a co founder of the People Party, which became the Ecology Party, which became the Green Party.

Teddy's brother, Jimmy, formed the Referendum Party. When Jimmy became ill with Pancreatic cancer in 1997 the party disbanded and Farage recruited many of its members for the fledgling UKip.
