There have been lots of calls to 'focus on the football', 'support the team as one', 'concentrate on backing the players' and other such varients. I just want to make sure I'm doing it properly and feel it's important to get it right ahead of the Birmingham game.
Despite my current stance (Ashton Out), I have no intention on chanting anything against him before or during the match. All of my focus will be on the team. But, what does that actually mean?
Should I be hurling abuse at our players for mis-placing a pass or should I be shouting encouragement for them to win it back?
Should I be shouting obscenities at our strikers for missing chances and ironically cheering when they are substituted or should I be calling for them to keep their heads up ready for the next chance?
Should I be moaning and groaning while our defenders pass amongst themselves because the football is so 'boring' or should I applaud how they are trying to pull the opposition out of shape and create the space to set up a more fruitful attack, as per the instructions of the manager we are supposed to be backing?
Should I be singing about the future death of a woman in her eighties who has no significance to me whatsoever or should I be singing positive songs about our players on the pitch?
I feel like I have mainly been trying to do the latter of each of the options above throughout the season, frequently against the tide of those around me (most of whom I had never seen until a couple of years ago). But I am concious that if we fail to win promotion it will due to people like me who want Ashton gone and not the people who are ambivalent or still pro-Ashton and have perhaps chosen to support the team by consistently using the first options.
Let's make sure we're all on the same page about this. After all, "when we've been the best at what we do, we've been together." |  | | |  |
