and a 4-1 home thumping by Swindon and away crowds so small you had your own terrace to run up and down

wasn't that the game where Swindon player-manager Glenn Hoddle ran the game from his sweeper position? Hoddle then played pretty much every game the following season as he took Swindon into the Premier League via the play-offs.

And it was the last time we won a division. Promoted as second best or winning the third best to sixth best play offs are memorable but nothing like being the best. CHAMPIONS!

Never forget that on 7th. April 2021, for ITFC, the Game Changed.

Only to be demoted 2 leagues, if I remember correctly.

Nice to see the rules are still as strictly enforced for clubs like Man City and Chelsea.........

Dozzell and Kiwomya so so good. Whitton a 100million right side player if we were signing him today!

Not quite. It was 89-90 that happened. They beat Sunderland in the play-off final but a week later, the punishment was handed out.

On appeal, they weren't demoted two divisions but stayed in Division Two with Sunderland promoted instead, although Sheff Weds appealed that as the highest placed relegated club, they should have retained Division One status.

Interestingly, we played both Sheff Wed and Swindon in our opening two games of the following season.

Ah. Vic Jobson hung on until 1998, and then the fans celebrated getting him out to be replaced by Ron Martin who absolutely drove Southend further into financial oblivion over the next 25 years.

I remember us joining in with the Jobson Outs when their fans came on the pitch at the end, all very good natured I think but can't remember why they wanted him out. Two consecutive promotions got them there and they finished 12th that season.

They were in the play-off conversation until quite late on that season.

At various stages of the season, it was very plausible that ourselves, Southend and Cambridge would all go up.

Brilliant day out. I was 17 at the time and the world was an amazing place full of birds, booze and football.

Looking at the YouTube highlights on that what struck me was John Lyall on the bench in the box on the side with Goddard who had been subbed sitting outside. Looked like after celebrating Tommo's goal McGiven and another went back in the box. No technical area for a manager/coach to stand by the touching showing their displeasure to all as some (not ours) do these days. Made me wonder when all that started. Think either sit on the bench or in the directors box with a better view was a better way.

As a student I was only able to attend 3 games:

- Ipswich vs Sunderland 0-1 (the night maxwell fell off his yacht)
- Middlesbrough vs Ipswich 1-0 (freezing cold)
- Sunderland vs Ipswich 3-0 (open terrace, chucking it down all game, should have been abandoned - worse than Blackburn this season)

Cracking season. Apparently....

(Interestingly we went 8 games without a win before Xmas - 5 draws followed by 3 defeats before we "clicked")

Freezing cold, open terraces, getting wet. All part of being a regular away fan in those days, we didn't expect anything better. If we had a roof when it rained it was a bonus, getting wet was part of being outdoors. As I had been a child in the era before "the school run" thought nothing of it. It didn't do us any harm!

Yep, me too.

I was also 17… at sixth form. ITFC were sweeping all before them in Div 2, and all that accompanied by discovering alcohol and girls (or trying to).

My favourite season.

Saw the games before and after. Grrr. Missed the Oxford away game too (work). Grrr. Saw lots of the others including a big home win v Bristol C in front of about 9000.

Saw a few away games that season and when work allowed a lot of home. We weren’t always great, but I dunno, I had ‘that feeling’. I went to Millwall away (I was working in Peckham) then a week later managed to get to Portsmouth at home. Battered both then played Liverpool in a gale. We were in my eyes confirmed good!

It was an interesting, fun season. Loved it.

We seemed to score from so many corners, Neil Thompson (former nappy salesman, compulsory to mention), delivered fantastic crosses, a Dozzell flick on and Kiwomya scoring.

Some of my best football memories.

Bobby Robson would usually watch the first half from the directors' box, as he knew he would have a better view of the game & its patterns. I don't really understand why managers/coaches feel the need to be prowling the "technical area" in the first half. Is it just to keep berating the luckless 4th official?
