They’re winning the play-offs unfortunately, wanted Millwall to do it.

We need second.

Our points return would have to take a downward turn that we haven’t seen since the start of the season to be caught by Southampton. If they win all games left they hit 84, so we need 12 points from 7 games.

If you look at our points return on a rolling 7 game run, our worse return is 10 from the first 7 games of the season. Since Oct/Nov we’ve returned 13-16 points from every 7 games, except once when it was 12. And before then we were mostly returning 12-13.

The average 7 game points haul from Oct/Nov has been 14.5

We need to become much worse than we’ve been for over 6 months to not hit 84+ points. Of course it’s possible, but given our consistency it seems unlikely.

They have won 5 of the last 6 away games, including beating Coventry, and drawn 1.

Honestly it's so tedious and repetitive. If the levels of pessimism on this site transferred to games we'd have no chance.

People seem to forget we have often gone to in form teams and McKenna has pulled a few masterstokes.

If we do go up and lose on the opening day people be decalring the season over by then.

Quite - we are 6 points clear of Southampton with a game in hand and they have 6 games left......

Every chance they could sneak it unless we get a result against them which looks very tough.

4 wins and a draw for us and it’s mathematically impossible for them to catch us.

13 points from 7 games is perfectly achievable, even if we lose to a Norwich and Southampton.

Southampton aren’t better than us. But their record since sacking Will Still is equal to ours over the same period.

All people are saying is that it would be foolish to write Southampton off. We are very much in the driving seat and are favourites to get second. But the Southampton game is now far more important than it was a few weeks ago. Probably lore important tha the Boro game, given both teams recent form.

If the southampton game becomes important it means weve had a terrible 5 games and not in keeping with how weve performed since the summer window closed.

Well said man. The bed wetting on here is unreal. Yes we have a tough run in but we are still odds on favourites. I honestly think 10 pts for Town will be enough and if it isn't, it won't be Southampton catching is it will be a team beginning with M.

Agree but we didn’t have 5 away games out of 6 in 3 weeks in many runs. Let’s just win the next 3 and out all this rubbish to bed ;)

If we don’t finish top 2, then I can’t see us going up. Southampton are playing with such confidence and importantly have momentum, they look a serious threat for promotion. Top 2 might not be out of reach for them, if we slip up at the Canaries and lose to the Saints they will believe they have got a chance to hunt us down.

Nov - Dec we played 5 away games, 2 at home. Of the 5 we won 3, drew 1 lost 1.

Next you will say the opposition wasn’t as strong and we drew the two home games. Answer: we won’t know until we play these teams coming up. It’s up to us. Simply put we need 5 wins from 7, maybe 4 and a draw. Who knows?

Instead of reasoning how much better all these teams are than us the sheer fact is we are second with a decent goal difference after 39 games. The table rarely lies and whoever finishes 2nd will deserve it.

The only time we need to worry about Saints is when we play them. Otherwise win as many games as we can. We need 13 points from 7 games. 85 is the magic number. So 4 wins and 1 draw or 3 wins and 4 draws and that wouldn't account for our rivals dropping any points at all.

It really is a fight to the finish between four teams.

The good news is we have to play two of the other three, the prize is ours to lose and every one of our seven games will be live on Sky. Shy must be wetting themselves at the prospect of a genuine must win game when we travel to Southampton.

Southampton, last night, showed the togetherness we did two years ago . It is what we do that matters, we don’t have to win every game we can probably afford to drop points in three games.

Whatever happens don’t bite your nails and don’t come on TWTD full of doom and gloom*

Just adding to what I have said. Currently unless my calculations are incorrect with our superior goal difference we actual only need 84 points. Of course that could change in seven games. But we would have to be very leaky to let in 10 goals more than we score in the seven games and hopefully Saints aren't going to score two goals more in every game than they let in.
All ifs and but's I know and this season has been so unpredictable with Coventry coming back to the pack and then roaring away again. Boro having a real wobble at the moment.
Millwall looking like a real challenge and probably still are and as we have seen one season after another a team that has a huge run, just as we did when promoted.

They also have a heavy run in like us, and will have to chase Man City shadows for 90 minutes 3 days before they play us.

Them beating Arsenal could be our saving grace.

They are far from the invincibles coventry had a amazing run funny we beat them twice . Then Boro looked great then the wheels went a bit not completely off. Then Millwall who then lost at home to Norwich.
Look been playing with no pressure a long way to go and they still have a decent Man city in there to play. Let's see where we are are after Saturday and the Middlesbrough game.

I'm guessing this is a rhetorical question, but since you asked it's happened once and we gained 12 points during that run. That run of 7 began with Boto and ended with Coventry.

Yes, I agree. It's of course far more nuanced than simple numerical analysis, since it depends on what the other team needs out of the game. OF the 7, I'd say 2 will have little to play for, but the other 5 will have something to play for. I suspect that will suit us, but it does come with risk. There could be some great games.

There is a scenario building here. Yes Southampton are in great form. But a defeat or victory against Man City could derail them. Injuries.expectation and playing too many games. We will play a tired side on 28 April that will hopefully be a promotion defining game.for us. Town normally play better against better sides. Last night was poor performance by Wrexham with Soton's Arsenal victory still strong. They are a threat but beatable.
