Leeds is the closest in modern times. Champions in 1992, top 5 in 94 and 95, 98, 99, 2000, 2001,2002, relegated in 2004, relegated to League One in 2007.

In my memory there was Man U, Chelsea and Spurs in the 70's. Aston Villa in 1988, just six years after winning the European Cup and us in 1987.

All of those were when finances were more of an equal playing field.

Leeds were the closest I could think, but they were in meltdown financially when they went down, if I recall correctly, having massively overspent in previous seasons. Spurs are still at the spending money to challenge at the top stage.

Man City have been down in Division Two within the Premier League era in 1998-99 - and they only got promoted back to Division One through the playoffs having finished 3rd behind Fulham and Walsall. They then spent 99/2000 in Division One, getting automatic promotion as we won the Playoffs to the Prem, but as we finished 5th, they were relegated again for one season.

They'll possibly be forked from an FFP point of view, if the claims that their contracts don't include relegation clauses are correct.

According to Capology they've an annual wage bill of £137m, with six players earning in excess of £150k per week.

With a £95m loss last year, they're going to be rather up against it next season if they do go down.

Unless, one assumes, they go for a 'sh*t or bust' approach next season, and gamble everything on bouncing back, and avoiding EFL repercussions. That never goes wrong, does it?

I'm sure it's already been reported that they do have relegation clauses
