| My God, why am I now suddenly stupidly nervous about tomorrow? 19:17 - Apr 13 with 3603 views | ghostofescobar | We couldn’t have one of those bumps in the road now, could we? Not after that on Saturday. Although we have had a couple of bumps after good results - losing 2 after thumping sheff u, thumping qpr and Swansea away with each game followed by tame home draws, 4 wins on the bounce, then losing at sheff u….actually that was the last bump that was post good results, so that’s out of our system. Isn’t it? Someone tell me it’s out of our system. I hate my inner negative voice. COYB | |

| My God, why am I now suddenly stupidly nervous about tomorrow? on 19:18 - Apr 13 by SomethingBlue | Because it's a really tough one! Horrible ground to go to, very big game for two sides who are both on good form, got to reset three days after a huge & emotional win. We'll have to really grind it out. A draw would be no disaster at all, a win would be absolutely huge. |
I agree with nearly all of this, but one correction; Portsmouth aren't on good form. They won Saturday, but they failed to win any of the previous 8. They've also not won any of their previous 5 home league games.

If Southampton win tomorrow and we lose, they're three behind us. If they then beat Swansea they'll be level on points before we play Boro. The gap isn't as great as it might seem.

Apart from they're obviously not in good form.

| Tomorrow feels big on 22:01 - Apr 13 by unstableblue | Has been a season of steps forward and back But we’re 9 games unbeaten with 6 wins And the squad seems to have got itself bonded and fit, and we have the depth to bring in freshness. Neil, Nunez, Clarke and McAteer with be chomping at the bit tomorrow. But I get your concern. Why I think tomorrow is big, is that if we do win I think we’ll then go on a serious run, lose and the wobbles return and we give Boro hope. Albeit they seem a busted flush - with their manager making a last throw of the dice by bating the team. Really looking forward to tomorrow though. |
Don't forget that should be 8 wins!

| Tomorrow feels big on 22:50 - Apr 13 by Guthrum | There are more upsides than down with this fixture. Win or draw and it pulls us further ahead of our assorted rivals (at least 3 points plus GD above third, maybe 5). Lose and our rivals gain nothing on us - they aren't playing - and we have only had consecutive losses once all season (but never more than two). Doubt it's a habit we're suddenly going to pick up now. |
Wrong. Southampton are playing. They can literally score the same amount of points as Boro. In fact if we lose and they win, they play again before us so could literally be on the same points as us when we kick off Sunday (albeit it we’d have two in hand but one is against them). In that respect it’s a huge night, if we equal or better their result that’s another game ticked off and the chances become increasingly slim of them catching us. If they gain 2 or 3 points, of course we’d still be favorites but it for sure gets us a bit twitchy. If we win, I think it’s all but over for the rest of the league, we’d only need 7 points from 5 to guarantee it (likely less).

Our other game in hand against Saints will be the West Brom one. Some of the permutations may start to get pretty confusing soon ...

they've also won one of their last one! their last 2 wins were against boro and millwall, so they have a type they've also doubled boro and unbeaten against soton

Quite. We would have to completely collapse to get caught. Whilst possible, I can’t see KM letting that happen. We’ve not been a streaky team all season, so there’s no reason to think we’ll suddenly go on a shockingly bad run. Norwich was a v hard fixture on paper and we bullied them out the game. If we keep showing that desire and focus we’re as good as up.

I was the same two years ago, even that last game against Huddersfield where the odds were very much on our side, I was a nervous wreck (Leeds had to win and we had to lose for it to be thrown away, IIRC). Most of us have been around long enough to remember the bad times, the 'almost made it' seasons under Royle and MickMa. We have learned to be pessimistic. Or maybe it's just expectations management?

Personally, I think a win tonight is the final nail in the coffin for all other teams. It sucks the energy out of Sunday for Boro. Millwall and Saints then know they have to be absolutely note perfect for the rest of the season. Can Millwall do that? They look shattered mentally and physically. Can Southampton? Surely they drop at least 2 points somewhere in this hectic schedule of theirs (possibly against us!) [Post edited 14 Apr 10:37]

Yeah, tonight is huge mentally both for us and the chasing pack. S’ton seem as though they could give it a good go - they seem full of confidence and are scoring goals. They’re over here on Saturday and the Swansea.com has been a tough place for some visiting teams, so that’s not an easy one for them. Fingers crossed Swansea do us a favour.

Not if they smash someone 6 or 7 nil and edge closer on GD. But I can't help feeling Saints will come unstuck somewhere. It may even be tonight. Blackburn are better on the road these days and Saints had to put in a big effort to overcome Derby. Or it could be Swansea away on Sat, they are playing with freedom as Boro found out to their cost.

have we had a 6 game run without picking up 9 points at ANY point this season? very consistent side this season (unlike 2023-24, where we had incredible streaks)

But by then we'll have two games in hand on them, the opportunity to score points without reply.

Well, I'm a sad stats geek with a spreadsheet of all the Championship results this season, allowing me to do all sorts of analysis. My favourite so far is producing a graph from it, showing what our league position would have been throughout the season had there been no games in-hand. Spoiler, we'd have been top 3 for far longer than people would expect

nice one, thanks. that's pretty incredible; 9 points in 6 would have got playoffs last season and we've not dipped below it!
