Europa League 22:28 - Apr 16 with 1159 viewsZx1988

Just looking at tonight's results; the removal of the 'second chance' for the Champions League failures seems to work really well.

A semi-final line-up of Villa, Forest, Freiburg, and Braga, whereas a few seasons back it would most likely have been teams like Roma, Man Utd, Atletico, and Dortmund.

Could end with Forest winning the Europa League to get into the Champions League… and also be relegated. Championship fixture chaos ahoy! Actually hope it happens just for the sheer absurdity of it.

Yeah I’d love to see how’d they’d manage it.

But will be more funny if Tottenham go down and can’t have both.

I'd take Forest in the Champions League in the Championship as a fallback. Real Madrid on Tuesday followed by Lincoln on Saturday would be quite the fall back to earth!

They would have to play nearly every single mid week through the season.

That's not so different to what we did in 2002-03, being relegated to what was then called Division 1 and also in the UEFA Cup (thanks to fair play).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Because the final stages are actually made up of Europa League teams, rather than them having been dumped out early on in the knock-out stages by the Champions League rejects.

Because the teams who qualified for the tournament actually stand a decent chance of winning it, rather than the group stage merely being a way of working out which teams get to be knocked out by the UCL rejects.

Imagine if, mid-way through the domestic season, the bottom six of the EPL got dumped down into the Championship, purely to give them a second chance of winning something for the season. Or if the teams knocked out in the third round of the League Cup got a second chance in the Football League Trophy.

Because it's not rewarding failure.

Isn’t failure already being rewarded by being in the Europa league .. or conference ?

Format’s like before were already in place in other major football competitions and other sports .. Rugby Union champions league to their lesser tournament.
Globally the euro league and conference finals recently have been taken notice of outside Europe with the better teams in them.
I’m not going to die on this hill but it’s just wasn’t clear why you thought it was better .. I do understand now only disagree.

It spreads success and availability of games to regular supporters for teams based in regional centres rather than concentrating the final stages upon capital cities or second centres like Munich and Porto. Diversity if you like.
