Because the teams who qualified for the tournament actually stand a decent chance of winning it, rather than the group stage merely being a way of working out which teams get to be knocked out by the UCL rejects.
Imagine if, mid-way through the domestic season, the bottom six of the EPL got dumped down into the Championship, purely to give them a second chance of winning something for the season. Or if the teams knocked out in the third round of the League Cup got a second chance in the Football League Trophy. | |

Format’s like before were already in place in other major football competitions and other sports .. Rugby Union champions league to their lesser tournament.
Globally the euro league and conference finals recently have been taken notice of outside Europe with the better teams in them.

It spreads success and availability of games to regular supporters for teams based in regional centres rather than concentrating the final stages upon capital cities or second centres like Munich and Porto. Diversity if you like. |  |
