| Back the manager, back the players, save the post mortem till June 12:01 - Apr 20 with 874 views | unstableblue | Come on people this board seems to have transported itself into a future in June where we’ve lost the play-offs?! There are 4 games to go! We have one in hand and a superior goal difference. It’s an incredible position from a team in transition. Yes there are question marks - but we’ve had question marks that wrote off Clarke, OShea, McAteer?!?! In the last champ season we were ever so close at the end, to our rival. And we drawed our way to the final game. And we also seem to be forgetting that teams have played up against us all season. And Millwall, Boro, Saints and Coventry have been worthy foe. We need to go to the Valley as a fan base and back the team with a Barnsley away atmosphere - breathe the points in. Then go again. Buy into the project NOW and see where we end up. COYFB | |

Everything is right now about a top performance and the right result at Chalton. Nothing else in itfc terms matters until Thursday, then concern ourselves with the next game. There is so much important football to come in the next few days, let alone new few weeks. So many potential future scenarios to unfold, they can all wait. Chalton away on Wednesday. Earn the points.

| Back the manager, back the players, save the post mortem till June on 12:06 - Apr 20 with 833 views | SomethingBlue | I was thinking yesterday all the way back to 1991-92 when we really staggered to the line ... terrible defeat at Sunderland, another no-show at Bristol City and that frustrating draw vs Grimsby before squeezing through at Oxford. The point is that it happens – nothing is really as it seems at this point of the season, not for anybody. We've lost once in our last 11 games, the form and consistency are broadly very good, it's a massive opportunity and if we win on Wednesday night we can almost touch it once again. West Brom looks slippery to me but I think we could and would step it up at Saints. Totally agree – the most important thing is to get up because, second time around, this club will be in a very good position to have a go at the Premier League. We really need to do it this season. The are four perhaps severn games left to get ourselves back to the PL. The team for all the callouts and a few slip ups is fighting, you dont go and earn the draw having been a goal down two times v Boro without that inner belief and fight. These are all turning points, but we need to turn up as a team and i know the lucky away fans able to secure tickets to the next three away will do us proud. These are your Peterboro, Barnsley or Hull West Brom type moments, we just need to do three this time! | |

I was thinking about 91-92 earlier and how one less point that guarantees us promotion this time, actually won us the title that season! You're right about stumbling over the line though. That Grimsby match on the Tuesday pre-Oxford really was a frustrating watch, however we had two games to get something like 3 points. A really low scoring campaign which is rarer these days given the high tides with the parachute clubs in operation now. 23/24 was not too dissimilar in terms of running on fumes going into the final weeks. After the Soton win, we were very jaded v Nodge, Watford and Boro. However, we were fortunate enough to get a two week break with Cov in the cup semi and one huge effort at the CBS and Hull (which was exhausting enough to watch) ensured that even a draw v Udders was plenty enough. This time, the schedule is not as kind. Pompey was practically a nailed on 3 points when the game was first planned, Baggies have the lethal combo of being in trouble and in form and odd things always seem to happen to us at Charlton (they need something too). Then you have the elephant in the room- our away form and recent horror memory of that night at Fratton. I've said on another thread, if you offered me QPR (H) last day and needing a win to go up, I'd snap your arm off. The thing is, we are more than capable of turning over Charlton, WBA easily and not getting swept aside by Saints but our fitness levels worry me. COYFBS. One more push.

It’s fascinating/depressing how much the internet - and social media - has changed the nature of what it means to be a fan. Back in 91-92, coming out of that defeat at Ashton Gate, it didn’t feel like the world was ending. Just got back on the coach, grumbled a bit and then got on with our lives and looked forward to the next game. A stark contrast to now where reaction online is a mix of “that player is a c**t and I hate him” or “fold the club” or “the EFL is corrupt” and on and on the hysteria and hate goes.

Yes, I was thinking about that 91-92 run in after Portsmouth last week. It was a definite stumble. And then Grimsby, I was in Churchmans for that (only £4 cheaper for a 15 year old rather than £6 in the North) and everyone trooped out the back in absolute silence until some old boy said "You would think we'd just been relegated". Even then, Oxford didn't feel like a nervous game, even when Magilton scored to put them ahead.

In my mind we’d finished the last premier promotion season somewhat stronger than this: League table with 4 to go: 1 Leicester City 42 47 91 2 Ipswich Town 42 32 88 3 Leeds United 42 43 87 4 Southampton 42 24 81 Description of our final push: April Kieran McKenna’s side started the month strongly with a 3-2 home win over fellow promotion hopefuls Southampton. This followed with a 1-0 reverse at home in the East Anglian Derby against Norwich City before a run of draws. Ipswich were held by Watford 0-0 and then Middlesbrough 1-1 at home. On the 14th April Kieran McKenna was awarded the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Season.[26] Ipswich then drew with Hull City 3-3 on the road where George Hirst made his return to the starting 11 from injury with the first goal of the game. The month ended with a 2-1 away win at Coventry City leaving Ipswich needing only a point from their final game of the season to secure back to back promotions and a return to Premier League Football. May The month sparked jubilation in the town of Ipswich as Ipswich Town secured Promotion to the Premier League after a 2-0 home win over Huddersfield Town.

I went in the Queens Head post match after Grimsby '92 and you'd be convinced we'd just got relegated. Blokes sitting at tables on their own staring at their pints in silence like they'd been stood up on a date. I was one of them so I can't criticise.

One of the few other times that was quite like that was after Watford equalised really late on in that Roy Keane season. I don't think anyone on the train said a word until somewhere after Chelmsford. As with Oxford after that Grimsby game, the next home game we beat Derby and were then quite good for a bit. And to return to the earlier point, even in 2009 the online reaction was nothing like as extreme as it is now - which does beg the question of how much worse it might get.
