I think it'd be risky to not play the 'first XI' at Wembley. I get that there'll be an urge to focus on promotion, but at the risk of irking players by saying 'terribly sorry, but you're not getting a chance to play at Wembley; we need you against Ipswich'?

And they may give the cup match more of a go.
| Will Southampton be on the beach next week? on 21:49 - Apr 21 with 891 views | NthQldITFC | I think so. That's a great result for us, takes Saints out realistically and they'll be committed to their semi and resting for the play-offs, which they'll rightly fancy if they rest their best players. Millwall still worry me though. Badly. Leicester and Oxford (effectively) down. Think we have to win 3 games, but we'll probably beat Saints now. | |

I hope they do. If we end up playing them in the playoffs they will be factoring that in with a Cup Final appearance.

They'll go full strength for the cup for sure. Let's hope they get extra time and pens to drain them even more. A cup final/win stays longer in the memory than a promotion. Admittedly the cup ain't what it was twenty years ago | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I think they'll have to go strong against City anyway. Hopefully they're chasing shadows all game because they looked a bit spent tonight. Feels like we've all be working on the assumption that game in hand is worthless, but we're capable of getting a result there.

Agree with this; if they were absolutely neck and neck I could see the logic, but all those players are going to want to play. And I remember our players talking about the difference in physicality of the Prem, so fingers crossed the team will still be gassed from the Cup game...!

Their team tonight was a weaker side! So expect that if they can’t come 2nd But 3 rd or 4 th is on the line for all!

Southampton drawing v Bristol City certainly helps us in that their chances of getting 2nd will probably be gone when we play them now, so not only will they be out of that race, but also they'll play a weakened side post-FA Cup semi & in preparation for the playoffs. But of course if Millwall beat us to 2nd place, we may regret that it wasn't Southampton that made it instead, as I would much prefer to be facing Millwall in the playoffs. A foursome of ourselves, Middlesbrough (with a returning & rested Hayden Hackney alongside Morris), Wrexham & Southampton looks quite daunting for an Ipswich side that struggles to consistently put good performances together.
