How many World Cups have you watched 11:22 - Jun 6 with 2708 viewsBelsteadCav

I’ve watched 10 from 86

I’m not sure if I remember 82 or not, my memory has been shot to pieces lately

I have watched 11, exactly half, starting with Spain 82 which is still in my top five.

When this one kicks off I will have watched over half of all world cups which makes me feel very old. I’m a proper geek like student of football history and always considered the first one in 1930 as proper fcking ancient when I was a kid.

Trailing vapour since 1999.

8th here.

I have vague recollections of USA 94 mainly, I think, due to some Happy Meal toys with him on them, but don't recall watching any matches.

Being 10 in 1998, I absolutely devoured that particular tournament.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Time is fecking weird as you age isn't it.

The 1930 and 1982 World Cups are the same in terms of years between the two as the 1974 and 2026 ones and we've been alive for both.

15, starting in 1966 when I was 15. I was in Germany at Easter that year taking a language course, and my hosts told me that they believed that England would win. I was ROFLMAO, as we say nowadays, but was delighted to be wrong. The one that hurt the most was in 1970, when were 2-1 up but lost 3-2 against Germany. The whole country went into a depression that changed the outcome of the General Election ... ...

Can remember 1982, especially as Mick Mills was England captain. Socrates , Rossi, Zico, Maradona , the Soviet Union team.

So many memories from that World Cup, for me.

Robson scoring after 30 seconds and Mariner scoring as well, as you say Mills the captain, the incredible Brazil side (Falcao, Eder etc how did they not win it?)

Paolo Rossi hat trick, Tardelli's amazing celebration.

The West German Schumacher making that amazing foul and getting away with it.

The iconic England shirt (still my favourite to this day).

The 81 season for Ipswich and 82 World Cup was the point at which football became a major thing in my life.

Same here, that's as bad as the three lions song now being 60 years of hurt and not 30!

Yes, same. Don’t have any memory of 1982 at 5 (can remember the Falklands War though) but every one from 1986.

Not sure I’ve felt less enthusiastic about one than I do for this one though.

Was only 4 in 1966 and remember nothing of that, so 1970 was my first, although I only clearly remember the England games and the great Brazilian team.

82 will always be the best tournament for me. Northern Ireland with 10 men for more than half the game beating the highly fancied hosts Spain in a seething Valencia stadium is my favourite ever World Cup moment. The football from Italy, Brazil and France in that tournament was outstanding.

From 2002 to 2014 I thought the tournaments were very underwhelming, but at least Southgate for all his faults reignited my interest in it again by producing an England team that went deep and had an outside sniff of winning it.

At the minute, less than a week away, I’m yet to feel much enthusiasm for this one...wake me up when we get to the knockout stages.

10. Got absolute pelters at school aged 7 for supporting Argentina in 86, then again in 1990. Watched 98 in a big French farmhouse with a load of mates on a post-finals lash-up. Watched 2010 when I was living in Mexico, that was a lot of fun.

I've studied this thread very carefully and have come to the conclusion that the major factor is your age!

France 98 was the first one I properly watched , got vague memories of USA 94 but didn’t really watch it

korea / Japan 2002 I liked a lot , was 15 then , enjoyed watching matches in the mornings before school because of time difference

Germany 2006 was my first World Cup in a pub!

Russia 2018 was special as I lived in Peru at the time and it was the first World Cup they qualified for since 1982

I liked Qatar 2022 too

Hopefully this one delivers!

Can remember watching the 1966 final as a 10 yr but my greatest WC was the 1970 In Mexico played during the summer school holidays, would watch the games replayed at about 7am then off to the park with a ball to relive the games with my mates . I loved Peter Bonetti ( the cat) always wore his thin green cotton goalkeeper gloves, but was mortified when he was blamed for our West Germany defeat . He played as Gorden Banks had gone down with a tummy bug.
This was the year Brazil were the greatest World Cup team ever in my opinion.
The year of the greatest World Cup song ‘Back Home’
The year the Mexico police locked up our captain Bobby Moore when he was falsely accused of pinching a necklace!

This thread bringing back some lovely memories,
The 1982 finals where England scored against France after only 27 seconds with an Ipswich town set piece
Terry Butcher flicking on a back header from a long throw by Steve Coppell and Bryan Robson scoring, Town had scored many identical goals that season with that Terry Butcher back header!
Also playing that match Mick Mills, and Paul Mariner who scored later in the 3-1 win
