On Mastermind. You get through to the second round after using Ipswich Town 78 Cup run (or whatever) and now need an unrelated specialist subject

What you picking?

I might go for Bill Bryson travel books.

Comandante Leopoldo Guzmán, fictional head of Franco's Spanish secret police in the Mark Oldfield historical trilogy…or the novels of Thomas Hardy 1891 to 1895.

Failing that, something to do with the Simpsons I guess.

It used to great on here when people let me say whatever I wanted and giggled along - (Rough translation of post from un-named TWTD contributor, 2026)

Any one of the following:

Bomber Command 1939–45
WW1 military aviation
The war at sea 1914-18
The Pre-Raphaelites
Charles Dickens novels
IK Brunel

Any of these would do, but they are more or less in order of preference.

Particularly niche. It might be too niche for the Mastermind adjudicators

The poetry of TS Eliot.

Never read TS Eliot, to my shame, but I know he was a big fan of cats to gets my vote. He of course wrote Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, a series of poems which formed the basis of the musical ‘Cats’.

If you or anyone else does decide to give his more serious stuff a go, don’t read or be put off by nonsense barriers from critics that are often put in the way about it being “difficult”, “complex”, or looking for “meanings”. Just read and *feel* it, how it hits and affects you.

I was lucky enough to come across it not through any ‘educational’ course, but in my 20s through an evening at a friend’s, sharing a bottle of wine, when she read from a book

“But to what purpose
Disturbing the dust on a bowl of rose-leaves
I do not know”.

Wow, who wrote that? I asked.
“TS Eliot” she said.
Who’s he? I said, never having heard of him!
Was hooked from then on though.

Despite reading a lot, I never read to look for meanings. I had a gutful of that doing A Level! I shall give TS a go.
