From 2026/27, Premier League teams will be punished for wasting time when restarting play. 🚫

β€’ Take too long over a goal kick? It becomes a CORNER.
β€’ Take too long over a throw-in? The other team gets the THROW.
β€’ A substituted player must leave the pitch within 10 SECONDS. If not, his replacement has to wait 60 SECONDS before coming on, leaving his team with 10 PLAYERS until then.

No bad thing to be honest, although the substitution time seems a little short.
Next up will be keepers going down injured and receiving treatment, so the captain will have to go off.

On a similar note; did I read somewhere that the time players have to wait before coming back on after receiving treatment is being increased to 60 secs?

It's a convoluted solution that still relies on subjectivity.

Have a separate official responsible for keeping time. Stop the clock whenever the ball isn't in play.

I thought the player increase to 60 secs is just GKs to stop the tactical timeouts.

Had the GK holding the ball too long to become a corner last season and very rarely did a ref implement this. I guess the goal kick to corner is when they would have issued a yellow card but that would only be late in games. Another set of rules implemented until GW3 and then will get forgotten.

But optimistic - first couple of months a throw-in will be given to the other team who then score from it in the 93rd minute. Manager has a meltdown and then it’ll be quietly dropped.

That will be because the keepers released the ball before the ref's visible five second countdown ended. Can recall four occasions in our matches last season where we recieved a corner in this scenario. I think that law change has worked well and has sped the game up.

I can't see goal kick/throw in changes working so well as there is no set time limit.

Does VAR count as time wasting?

That's the problem - inconsistency. The rule changes are decent enough. But we know form past experience, they only do it for a couple of weeks and then revert back.

I’m glad they stopped with the ridiculous amount of added time as that became a bit of a joke.

I don’t understand why they suddenly stopped the yellow card for preventing quick FKs, throw ins, kicking the ball away etc. It happens so blatantly again and nothing happens.
