| Tough task for a new manager 11:16 - Jun 11 with 425 views | Kev_W | Whoever takes the job is facing one of the toughest tasks in English football. He has to build a side capable of staying up – a huge challenge in itself, but also must manage the core of the existing squad who have become close to KM or who have joined partly because of him. Add to that the need to continue the overall momentum of the club - KM’s approach and personality has been key to drawing in and winning back supporters and building an improved club culture. Following a successful and popular manager is never easy. The new manager will need to be able to attract players who we may be able to afford but who may be reluctant to join a relegation fight. Few of the names being floated feel like they fit the bill. OGS, Frank are perhaps the two exceptions. O’Neil, Edwards and so many of the others do not immediately feel like the right fit for the club. Hard to see Ashton going for a European manager – not sure he has the knowledge of that filed or the inclination although he could surprise us. A rush to appoint an underwhelming candidate who does not have early buy in from supporters will stall some momentum and create a burden for that manager who will need to overcome scepticism as early priority. | | | | |

The loss of McKenna is also the loss of a counterweight to Ashton's control of the club, no new manager starts with anything close to the affection of the fans that McKenna has earnt. Unedifying little comments from Ashton, in particular the digs at McKenna over the latter's rejection of any of the proposed strikers in January, hint at some disagreements over the past year. And, of course, there remains the fallout from the Farage fiasco which does not appear to have been properly resolved by the ownership group. Last time we had a sustained period of success anything close to this was Burley's era and we all know how sustainable that proved after the high of Summer 2001. I hope that we can build on McKenna's legacy far better than we managed back then. [Post edited 11 Jun 11:51]

Slot followed Klopp, wins league, a year later, out. This is now modern football we live in, but we support the Club, not the manager. I'm just trying to make myself feel better...We'll never sing 'We've got Super' again. | | | |
