Roy is looking a bit older tonight on ITV, I’m sure he will give us lots of pointers on who we should nab from Mexico or South Africa tonight.

| World Cup scouting thread on 22:00 - Jul 1 with 900 views | Hermann_eats_puffin | With Diarra scoring for Senagal against Belgium tonight that's 8 goals scored so far by Sunderland players in the World Cup. The only other clubs who have players who have scored more WC goals are Real Madrid and PSG. You have to say Sunderland's scouting and recruitment last summer was simply outstanding and they got so much right it really seems like a once in a blue moon event because I can't think of many other transfer windows by teams newly promoted to the PL in recent years that would beat it. It's something that we should be looking to emulate however unfortunately I'm really not sure that we'll manage it. | | | |
| World Cup scouting thread on 11:25 - Jul 2 with 795 views | Hermann_eats_puffin | Talking of players who are at the world cup and are making moves within the PL there is the Croatian defender Luka Vuskovic who Brighton are buying from Tottenham for £46m. Now I'm not saying in a million years that we can compete with this sort of deal but we need to get far better at identifying top prospects abroad before they become very expensive and totally out of our reach. Spurs bought him and he arrived in 2025 for a fee believed to be around £12m and that sort of fee we can afford. Because the player wanted to play games instead of sit on the bench Spurs immediately loaned him to Bundesliga team Hamburger SV for the 2025-26 season and then this summer he's being sold to Brighton for £46m. Now I'm not saying it's an easy task to go from a club run down in the Evans era to a club with Brighton, Brentford or Bournemouth levels of scouting networks but this is where a lot of investment and effort needs to go if we are to ever have any ambition of catching up with the likes of Brighton, Brentford or Bournemouth. We need to be identifying these players when they are £5m-£15m players directly from abroad playing them and then selling them for £30m-£60m to boost the club finances and then buying the next one off the conveyor belt if the scouting network is good enough. | | | |

Maybe we also need to be looking at nations who didn't make it to the World Cup like Italy, Nigeria, the Republic of Ireland, Denmark, Hungary etc. and also the players in nations at the Cup who didn't make the final squad selection if we are looking for value that hasn't been inflated by global exposure. Mind you, makes this thread a lot more difficult.

Think lower top league German clubs are sniffing This world cup has definitely shown that there are very capable players that could be available for pretty cheap prices.
