I still can't make up my mind on it.

Which is why it's a brilliant decision to stick to his guns.

Typical of Shearer to fail to see it from a different perspective.

Mbappe clearly looks for it and leave a leg dangling. If he wanted to stay on his feet he could have quite easily, and I don't buy into the striker having the right to go down.

I wish we'd see more penalty shouts like that waved away. Sadly that gets given 100/100 in the Premier League.

It was the correct decision

Fantastic refereeing. Correct decision.

And two fingers up at the VAR!

And yet the BBC and their pet referee can't seem to get their heads around it.

Thought there was minimal contact and not a pen as mbappe dragged his foot looking for it. What I would say is that it could have been given as well and in that scenario would have equally wanted the ref to stick by his decision.

Further to this it's disappointing to hear Darren Cann (who always seems quite measured) condemn the referee so vehemently just now.

Why can't people accept these decisions are so subjective and ultimately the ref is making a judgement, and perhaps be glad the game isn't being re-refereed?

Or have they all just become so brain washed into thinking players aren't able to stay on their feet in those scenarios?

Ref explained it. The striker initiated the contact. He is correct, but Shearer and all think it is only the contact that matters. The ref called it correct but is going to be slated for it.

A highlight of this World Cup so far is the lack of simulation… on 22:05 - Jun 16 with 1289 viewsunstableblue

… and going down easily

Now that was probably a penalty, but he definitely lifted his leg to start simulation… so an argument it shouldn’t be given

Regardless of that decision and whether you agree or not, that was a really great ref performance - let it flow and didn't buy any nonsense.

I can never understand a player who, to all intents & purposes, has taken the ball past the defender & now has a chance maybe to score, but instead decides to essentially cheat by allowing his legs to collapse beneath him, with or without contact (it's a contact sport... plenty of heavier contacts NOT inside the goal areas where ref plays on) in an attempt to "win" a penalty & perhaps get a fellow pro either carded or sent off

Great decision by the ref as this most certainly was NOT a clear & obvious error

The only thing that was missing was a yellow card for cheating by Mbappe

(Which I personally think should be a straight red for cheating like this, but that's a debate for another day!)

You guys are on a different planet. That was a penalty all day long. If that was Town, you'd be livid.

Watch in real speed...the notion that Mbappe looks fot the contact just doesn't wash. The defender misses the ball and then its his body that takes out Mbappe's left leg rather than the foot he was leading with to try and play the ball

It's time more refs stuck to their guns and ignored the video game players. It worked for many many decades before!

I thought it could have gone either way so I’m pleased the ref stuck to the on field decision

Only seen the highlights on a small screen but looks like Mbappe was taken out. The defender goes right through him! Most stonewall of stonewall for me.

And so certain were he and the BBC commentator that it was a penalty that they basically talked over the bit where the ref announces the decision, leading to them missing the decision and the reasoning.

Shearer is a terrible pundit. I find it hard to stomach that licence fee payer's money has been used to send him on a jolly to New York.

And Chris Sutton has gone too. He has deep knowledge of the Scottish leagues so is able to bang on about how players from there are doing domestically but his voice is so dull and he adds nothing other than that niche knowledge.

Terrible pundit, but not as bad as Murphy. And can Warnock (Stephen) just shut up.

Sent them over to the Good Olde U S of A but their main studio is in Salford …

ITV stuffs them on the studio stakes..

Actually, I'm not that bothered about the studio being in Salford.

There would be uproar from the usual suspects if they spent a load of cash on a studio set up in the US, or any of the other host countries. There seems little point in being based in one host city when there are so many across such a vast distance, especially in the early stages.

Hopefully the BBC will have come to some kind of arrangements for Shearer's expenses with Goalhanger given that he's also recording The Rest of Football every day in the US.
