England v Ghana & Croatia v Panama 18:57 - Jun 18 with 873 viewsZx1988

Have I got it right that, if we beat Ghana and Panama don't beat Croatia, we could be guaranteed to win the group after only two games?

It looks to be the result of the new tie-breaking format, introduced for this tournament. If there's a tie in the group table, the first tie-break criteria is a mini-league between the tied teams, rather than traditional Goal Difference.

So if we beat Ghana and Panama don't win, we'll have beaten the other two teams that could also finish on six points.

That could make for some interesting final rounds.

I also see that the final tie-breaker comes down to whoever is highest in the FIFA rankings.

If it was up to me, I'd put the lowest ranked team through.

Say Cabo Verde end up tied with Spain on all the other metrics, there's only one team that's got there on merit, and it sure ain't the Spaniards.

Quite a few things to go through to get there though.....

Step one
greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned

superior goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned

greatest number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned
If no decision can be made through this procedure, the criteria below shall apply as :

Step two
superior goal difference in all group matches

greatest number of goals scored in all group matches

highest team conduct score (players and team officials) relating to the number of yellow and red cards obtained
