Help clean up a river and you may go to prison

It’s basically “ you made us look bad, now we’re going to prosecute “

Regardless of intent, you can't just go dredging rivers and disposing of hazardous waste without a licence.

It's interesting to note that the article makes no mention of where the waste ended up.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

No prosecution happening and no prospect realistically of two years in prison. He did however take a digger to a piece of river without a permit, which clearly is not something you can just ignore

Have you intentionally not added the actual context of what happened?

He hired a digger and used it to essentially dredge the bottom where all manner of wildlife may live. It might also destabilise the banks depending on the river size.

That whole account is just rage bait and conspiracies (as the owner acknowledges).

It's nothing like that.

Not showing much critical thinking here.

Of anyone, one would have thought that an environmental lawyer should have known all about the need for permits.

I'm a bit surprised at the rough ride you're getting here Billy. THis:

“This seems to get to the nub of the problem with the EA. They do not prosecute things that they should prosecute and all they are doing is going after easy targets.”

...rings true to me, at least.

if nothing else, he's highlighted the abuse of that river / official inaction .

The big surprise to me is that he lives on a boat on the Roding - I had no idea it was navigable.

Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

It’s ok

I could post “ it’s gorgeous out there in Suffolk today”

And they’d find something wrong with it.

Our country side and rivers are a mess, have been for years, I’m all for sorting it out, because the environmental agency won’t

I think they'll be more of this sort action as such agencies have their funding cut and cut.

There is no current prosecution.

It was a stunt, the response to which the lawyer will have fully expected. It might be a valid attention gaining stunt, but the reporting and spin on this is absurd.

Out of interest, what is it about the reporting that's absurd? My Londonnews of whatever it is may be an online rag, but the Guardian write up doesn;t seem that at odds with it...

Guardian is far more factual than the op for instance. No objections to the former.

Hmm. They should have stopped short of the dredging. For all they know, there could be critical infrastructure running under or near to the river and they could (potentially) alter the hydrodynamics of the stream and lead to a threat to that infrastructure. Hypothetically of course. Of maybe they did know and there isn’t any. It’s not really a done thing in either case.

Good on them for the cleaning up part though. The EA are definitely going after an easy target here.

I think intention should matter - they’re trying to do something about the state of our rivers and streams, which have become a national embarrassment over the last decade. And….

EA would not have been bothered if people pitched up and collected rubbish. They turned up with a digger and then people are trying to make out that the Ea reaction is somehow extraordinary.

“Reform UK has ditched its commitment to nationalise Britain's water and energy sectors, marking a significant reversal for the party.

The policy U-turn comes just months after party leader Nigel Farage insisted that bringing half of the troubled water industry into state ownership would cost "a lot less" than the £50billion figure cited by analysts, particularly if struggling companies were permitted to collapse first.”

Both things can be true though.

That the EA seem to go after the easy wins, rather than the real criminals, is undoubtedly true. I see that in my line of work, and it has beem the case for years.

Equally, you can't just hire a digger and dredge a river without getting the right permits, and arrangements to do so.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.
