Ah no, was hoping for something more imaginative than Gary O'Neil 21:02 - Jun 19 with 1087 viewsTrequartista

Palace and Wolves both going for top European bosses.

Let's hope we get the 9 top players we need and not Championship all-stars before the Sunderland game to give him half a chance.

Is Cesar Peixoto a 'top European boss'? He's not exactly had a stellar coaching career up until now!

If Gary O'Neill was foreign and managing on the continent I expect he'd be welcomed by a lot more.

Well he is managing on the continent, but it's the record at Bournemouth and Wolves rather than his nationality.

There are so many European leagues where a manager would love to move to the Premier League that there must be someone who fits the bill.

This feels very much like Royle after Burley, we got Royle the sack when we sent Man City down and we got O'Neil the sack after beating Wolves away. OK Royle turned out better than I expected but we still didn't get up.

Certainly not exciting on the face of it…but idk maybe he’s the kind of ‘safe’ pragmatic appointment we need to get 17th and survive/establish ourselves.

Someone who knows the league, what's required, has kept a promoted team up and did fairly well with a Wolves team before they imploded (Wolves were a ticking time bomb to be fair).

His form has had some iffy patches, but he's more experienced now. That was my main 'however'.

Did a solid job with Strasbourg.

It's a pragmatic approach. I don't really know what people are expecting with who is available.

Good luck and crack on. Don't discount a manager before they've even got going.

Bit difficult to compare with Palace. They've been in the PL 13 years they are an established PL who just won a European trophy.
We've just been promoted and won a European trophy in 1981.
Clearly its easy for Palace to attract a top European manager.

That he is managing abroad was partly the point. As soon as anyone mentions a German managing on the continent everyone goes, "ooo, interesting."

He did well at Bournemouth and whilst no one can disagree that Iraola was a step up and took them to the next level, he didn't deserve to be sacked and I'd be delighted for the same kind of season for us.

And at Wolves it's become apparent that he did reasonable job at a club already on a downward trajectory.

He's not spectacular or exotic but he is solid at this level, which is what we need.

If he keeps us up then it's job done. I think the recruitment is more important than the manager at this point. If we can do a Sunderland he has half a chance, if we get Championship all stars then like McKenna he will have no hope.

As long as Ashton is in charge I don't think we will ever see an exciting foreign prospect like Hurzeler, Le Bris, Iraola et al manage us.

Once again Ashton shows his limited scope and depth by going back to one of his former clubs (in this case, Bristol City) for GON. Ditto with players. How many ex-Bristol City and WBA players have we signed? Every other player we signed were either from the EFL or peddled to us by their agents (i.e. Cajuste) after no other club wanted them

If our recruitment is so limited due to the limitations or even whims of one individual we will forever not be able to tap into a larger talent pool and sign better value players as long as Ashton is in charge.
