Would Chat GPT want Gary O’Neil? 21:08 - Jun 19 with 425 viewsalial

Gary O’Neil is one of the more difficult Premier League managers to evaluate because his highs have been genuinely impressive, but his lows have been severe.

The case for Gary O’Neil

1. He’s repeatedly outperformed expectations

At Bournemouth, he took over after the 9-0 defeat to Liverpool when almost everyone expected relegation. He kept them up comfortably and finished 15th. Many observers felt he overachieved given the circumstances.

At Wolves, he arrived just days before the season started after Julen Lopetegui’s departure, with limited transfer backing and widespread predictions of relegation. Instead, Wolves beat Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham and spent much of the season pushing the top half.

2. He is tactically flexible

Unlike managers who insist on one system, O’Neil has shown a willingness to change shape and game plans depending on the opponent. Wolves successfully switched between back-four and back-three systems, and he gained praise for detailed tactical preparation against stronger sides.

3. Players generally seem to buy in

He has a reputation for strong man-management and improving individuals. During his Wolves spell, players such as Pedro Neto, Matheus Cunha and João Gomes developed significantly under him.

4. He’s still very young for a manager

At 42, he already has experience in relegation battles, squad rebuilding and Premier League management. Most managers don’t accumulate that level of experience until much later.

The case against Gary O’Neil

1. Defensive structure became a major issue

The biggest criticism is that his teams often concede too many chances. Wolves’ defensive record deteriorated badly in 2024-25 and they eventually sat in the relegation zone after conceding the most goals in the league when he was dismissed.

2. He’s better as a firefighter than a project builder—so far

A common criticism from Bournemouth and Wolves fans is that he excels at stabilising chaos but has not yet shown he can build a long-term elite system over multiple seasons. Some supporters have described him as a “firefighter manager” rather than a transformational project coach.

3. The second season looked worse than the first

His first full season at Wolves generated huge praise, but the following campaign collapsed. Some managers can organise an underdog quickly; fewer can keep evolving once opponents understand their methods.

4. Questions remain about possession football

His best work has come when his teams are compact, reactive and tactically focused on upsetting stronger opponents. We still haven’t seen clear evidence that he can dominate games week after week the way managers like Thomas Frank, Andoni Iraola or Graham Potter have shown at their best.

Would I want him as my manager?

It depends on the club.

If I’m a newly promoted club, lower-half Premier League club, or a team in trouble?
Yes. Absolutely.

He’s already proven twice that he can organise a side quickly, create belief, and get results against stronger opposition. I’d trust him more than many experienced managers in a relegation battle.

If I’m aiming for Europe every season?
I’d probably choose someone else.

If I were hiring today for a stable Premier League club with ambitions of reaching the top 8, I’d lean towards managers such as Thomas Frank or Andoni Iraola because they’ve shown a clearer long-term football identity and sustained progression.

My overall rating

* Survival/relegation battle manager: 8.5/10
* Mid-table Premier League manager: 7.5/10
* European-chasing project manager: 6.5/10
* Elite/top-six manager: Not enough evidence yet

So my view is that Gary O’Neil is a good Premier League manager, not a great one yet. If he fixes the defensive issues that hurt him at Wolves, there’s every chance he becomes one of England’s leading coaches over the next decade. The raw coaching ability is clearly there.
