When I was in my late teens/early 20s, I used to work in a pub in rural Suffolk. There where more than a few Suffolk old boys come in the pub. But one chap, 'Percy', used to overwhelm me with Suffolk sayings. Some of which he called "Suffolk Squit". I have never heard that saying from anyone but him. He was one of those people that should have just had a microphone put in front of them for an evening with the Suffolk knowledge he had. He was the first person that I heard the phrase 'slang ways' from. It basically means 'diagonal'. Similar to 'on the huh', but not quite. There was another proper Suffolk chap, Paul, who, despite being a Norwich supporter, was one of my favourite customers. "We're both shite," was his accurate assessment of the football in the mid-90s. He had a load of tales and experiences doing national service in Aden, as well as more than a few Suffolk tales, that also should have been recorded. I heard most of their stories more than once and never tired of listening to them. I only wish I could remember them better. Both, unfortunately, are no longer with us. | |
