Morons getting empowered is the one of the worst consequence of Brexit / social media.

Agreed to play for England?

If you believe that Olise chose France over England because there is less racism aimed at black players in the French national team than England, I would suggest you read about the vile racist abuse directed at black French players after the defeat to Argentina at the last World Cup.

That was the same year that the far right polled 41% in the French
Presidential elections. Our equivalent can’t poll much higher than 25%.

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

Wasn't the same scale as the abuse suffered by England players. I had to hunt to find any report of the French instances you cite. Wouldn't be surprised if Londoners like Semenyo & Olise would only be aware of the Euro 2020 final racism.

They're hardly going to come out and say it's because elements of the English support are racist.

Amazing that all the racist people in the world are from England. Thank goodness there are no racists in France, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Scotland and Ireland.

You might be right that Semenyo and Olise chose Ghana and France for unrelated reasons. I might be right that they were deterred by vile racist abuse handed out to England players who were more successful in a major tournament than any since 1966, at the time when they'd have been choosing which country to represent. It's an unwinnable argument either way.

But it's undeniable that elements of English support have, for certain groups, made representing their country of birth and upbringing a less attractive prospect than it should be.

Sadly, some people won't change their stance on anything, no matter if you can prove otherwise, on both sides of the argument to be fair,
What gets me is people like the OP can't understand that they are just as bad, because they have to start the argument in the first instance and then wonder why it all kicks off, it's almost like they need to justify their own opinion

The 2020 thing was mostly a tiny minority of idiots on which nobody would have noticed until media and others amplified it for the sake of condemning. I remember going through my social media feeds at the time, the noise was 99.5% people reposting, replying or commenting in outrage. Ragebait works, sadly.

Makes it look like there's a massive problem when it's just the usual proportion of morons you will find in any nation or society.

"2020 thing was mostly a tiny minority" - were more than 600 reports, 207 posts were judged to be criminal, and were eleven arrests. Twitter had to remove more than 1,000 tweets.

Was much larger scale than the France 2022 WC exit. Your anecdote matters less than these facts. I expect such abuse has a real impact on young players in affected groups choosing which country to represent.

Maybe the original post was poorly timed, but the facts remain. Since Brexit the right within society have found their voices (and flags) and are emboldened by the media to vent their hate at every turn. Farage, Yaxley Lennon and Lowe are stoking the fires for financial gain and notoriety. Unfortunately some have grabbed onto it and seem to think these grifters give a damn about the working classes.

I have friends born and bred in this country who refuse to identify as English as they are ashamed by the vocal minority who continue to abuse fellow Brits because of the colour of their skin. Frankly anyone who denies that the voices of bigots are louder than at any point since the seventies are either blind, stupid or completely detached from reality.

i suspect the 'far right' are no more numerous than in the 70s. we've always had a small minority of nasty, racists, thugs and bigots, often with a violent, quasi-fascist ideology (if it can be called that) dating back to the 30s. i'm not convinced there is more of them now, though they may be more visible because of social media.

the change isn't in those loons, but in the much higher number of people backing reform etc. and there needs to be an honest discussion of why up to 30% of the electorate do that currently. they haven't become 'far right', but they are rejecting the status quo and they are angry that they've been ignored and belittled and they have carried the cost of policies which they have consistently rejected. the connection to brexit is that it was a product of that same anger and the same rejection of a status quo that was letting them down.

Still, 207 posts or even 1000 tweets is pretty small from a population of 55 million. Considering those will not all have unique authors, and will include non-English posting from Russia or the USA to stir things up, I think my conclusion isn't far off.

When every moron from Carlisle to Penzance has the ability to publish to the world in an instant, no surprise there is some ugliness. Sadly it is happening every day, but this example involved England players, household names, following an exit from a tournament, therefore got widely noticed and reported and dealt with.

I've come to this thread a little late but was intrigued by this particular post as it reflected my views on the subject quite well.
I think the brexit reference in the OP was misguided and took away somewhat from the thread title, which if I'm not mistaken is alluding to abuse directed to black players over white players.
I've been quite surprised at the vitriol aimed at the OP, as that fact is fundamentally true.
It's just that the brexit reference isn't particularly helpful as 51% of people voted for it, so it follows that 51% of people here would be affronted by the accusation. The OP have put their hands up, so fair play.
I think the social media comment remains valid, in that was the platform used by racists to hurl their vile abuse at the black players specifically.
It's disappointing that it has been described as only a minority of fans doing it. I don't suppose it was the intent, but it feels a bit like we're saying that's ok then.
If there were 100 people in a room and 20 (a minority) were directing the N word at you, I can't imagine as white person how that would feel, but change that to the C word and I can start to understand (just a little) what that may feel like.
There is absolutely no doubt that the far right are emboldened in a way not seen in the UK for a long time, so although a little misguided, it's been an interesting thread and I think Suffolk's response is spot on.

Good second para there.

Doesn't make sense to claim Brexit caused this sentiment, or a lurch to the right. It was an expression of sentiment that was already there, bubbling just under the surface. Emboldened some extremists, sure, but it didn't create them.

I honestly don't know if you're right about the comparison to the 70s Lowers, but what I say is that social media has not only provided a platform that is ripe for far right exploitation but it also enables a greater coordination that hadn't previously been there.
That's the bit of the OP that I did feel some affinity for.
