This World Cup feels like a real shift in the power base towards Africa.

The Belgians could come back and win here of course but I fancied Senegal to win this and I fancied Morocco to do the Dutch. Morocco could go all the way.

Really feels like we’ve three serious footballing continents now.

We could have easily got Senegal this round, and we would have been in big trouble watching this.

In a sport where 'athletes' are now proving more influential than 'artists' or technically gifted maestros by and large, is it any wonder?!

That’s a weird take. I’d suggest you’ve not been watching the actual football.

I've got the match on as I type?

What is weird about that take? Belgium are powder puff and are being overpowered in the middle of the park and are vulnerable to Senegal's fast transitions. Again, it boils down to physicality.

Senegal have 10 French born players at this tournament. The French academies have produced 99 French born players for this World Cup with only 23 of them actually playing for France. This has proved a massive benefit for African football with 13 French born players playing for Algeria, 11 for the Democratic Republic of Congo, 10 for Senegal, eight for Côte d'Ivoire, seven for Tunisia and six for Morocco.

Basically the French are dominating World football.

This is nothing new as such.

After Brazil's wonderful team of 82 was unsuccessful - Brazil moved their football to a move 'athletic' approach. Players like Dunga came to the fore at the expense of the more gifted and traditional central midfielders as Brazil looked to combat European physicality.

Physically strong, powerful forwards and full backs (Cafu and Roberto Carlos as prime examples) really came to the fore in this era, a re-defined role where their strength and pace and endurance was utilised both going forward and tracking back.

Add to that Parreira and Zagallo prioritised defensive discipline and athletic transitions, a blueprint that successfully ended Brazil's 24-year World Cup drought in 94.

What we are seeing from the African nations is not that far removed. Big physical players BUT technically sound, well disciplined and coached. Most players are playing in top divisions across Europe and beyond. These players know how to play.

DRC are a really good example of a team that are structured, well organised, hard to play against but can also hurt you on the break.

Like Brazil in the 90s - these are 'lumps' these are players that are big, strong, powerful, quick and technically excellent. I'd argue that the mindset is there as well. I get the impression that African nations now feel they are on a level playing field with other Continents - rightly so.

It's great to see.

What's with the odd-shaped stand behind one of the goals in this stadium, anyone know? Looks weird.

It's fairly typical of NFL stadia.

The best views are along the sides, so it's often the case that at least one end stand is designed as a feature or, at least, isn't developed to its full potential.

For a country with a small population, Belgium had a a once in a lifetime opportunity with their ‘golden generation”. Which they failed to take.

Those key players are getting older and aren’t being replaced with like for like quality throughout the squad. They’ll start to slip down the rankings over the next decade.

They've always been solidly decent, even in the mid to late 80's with the likes of Enzo Scifo and that bloke who was going to sign for us and didn't... Jan something.

But not a realistic contender to win the World Cup. Which they were in 2018.

Trying to get a tune out of Lukaku is like watching Rod Stewart performing Do Ya Think Im Sexy on stage at the age of 80.

Edit. That was bound to happen 😂😂😂

Senegal were the superior outfit for 85 minutes but they’ve just shrunk.

They need to find a route back into this or they’re going home .
