As I said yesterday, there’ll be a lot more to it than just O’Neil coming in and saying yes or no to deals which have been lined up.
The fact that we kick off later this season does give us a little breathing room, so still don’t think we see anyone for another week or 2 at least. | |

Yes if Pierre-Emile Højbjerg is available and interested in coming to Town that sounds like a very good addition to the midfield given the amount of top flight experience he would bring to the team!

As I always say, you’re not ‘interested’ in these players unless you’ve had encouragement from his agent/player themselves that they’re willing to join, it’s how the club, Ashton, O’Neil etc can sell it to the player(s) that were the best option.
I’ve been encouraged by who were being linked with this summer, incredibly ambitious targets and whilst we won’t get all of them, 2-3 of that calibre will be a good start. | |

Yes I agree that we as a newly promoted club will be used as a bargaining chip by both players agents and other clubs this summer as players agents & clubs try to get the very best deals possible for players on the move. And some of this will be played out in the public domain as players agents & clubs leak player enquiries to try and drive other interest and better offers for players and that's the way of the world and we just have to accept that because we can't change it.
However that doesn't mean we should aim high and try to sign players that would really move the dial of the quality of our first eleven.
That's not to say we'll win the tussles with other clubs because you rightly say that if a players choice is to say go to Aston Villa, Juventus or Town sadly being realistic we don't stand much of a chance.
However I doubt that say last summer Sunderland or Leeds when promoted signed all the targets that they wanted. I think that just the other day someone posted a link to a Leeds forum linking them to the same Brazilian defender as we've been linked with and it referenced that last summer as a newly promoted team they missed out on several of their targets losing out to other more established PL clubs or the big clubs in say Italy or Spain.
But that doesn't mean that we don't try and if we try enough top level targets hopefully some will come off as new signings for Town!
However just as Gary_Knows has said above I do not expect these deals to be done quickly because if we're targeting top level players they will want to take their time to assess their options and pick the best offer on the table to them this summer. Whilst we may not like this fact as Town fans but for top class players an offer from Town is not something they'd jump at in the same way as they would for a move to say Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea etc. etc. where they'd run to the club to grab a pen and sign a deal to move.
Now if we wanted to sign someone tomorrow who is currently at the bottom end of the Championship then they'd run to sign for us because we'd be the big fish. But if we want to shop in a bigger & better pond we'll have to be patient and prepare for some disappointments along the way as we miss out on players to other more established PL clubs or bigger clubs in Italy, Spain or Germany because that is the way of the football food chain.
However I hope that we keep aiming high and yes as a result of that we may well not get every target we want but hopefully we'll sign enough to see us to safety next season!
As we all know the majority of moves happen later in the transfer window and whilst we'd love signings in the door early it's just not realistic especially in a world cup year which will probably have an effect of dealing some deals for players currently away on WC duty and we'll have to wait for the trickle down effect and the market to get more active.
