| Piece on altitude and FIFA rules for England's next game 08:58 - Jul 3 with 1342 views | Steve_M | Seems an odd requirement to insist teams have to be in situ 24 hours ahead of a match, especially when one of the teams is effectively at home. I wonder whether they would have enforced i were Iran still in..... https://www.theguardian.com/fo | |

It's going to massively disadvantage England unfortunately. Not much we can do though, just have to hope the FA have already made allowances for this with some kind of fancy equipment to combat the effects for the players.

I have no doubt that the players will all be sitting and sleeping in altitude control tents between training sessions, meals, etc. I had a friend that was part of a study when we were at university and he basically lived on his bed in a plastic tent between lectures etc.. turned himself into an absolute beast in terms of cardio vascular performance.

I wonder whether they could not just fly in to tick the training box, fly out again and overnight at a lower altitude and then fly back in the day of the match? It would be a logistical ball ache, but would help with the altitude issue. On a separate thought, is there scope to take on FIFA either because of the unfair imbalance or even under safety grounds (I’m not sure about the latter, as 2,200m isn’t at a height you normally have medical issues - you’d need a physiologist’s view on whether there’s the potential for harm. That may be overkill/over egging the impact).

I really hope you're right. Tuchel's been playing dumb on all of this, criticising FIFA's rules and effectively saying there's nothing England can do to prepare for the altitude now, but that must all be mind games surely?

I think your first suggestion is against the rules, unfortunately. As an aside, this whole issue highlights why it's daft to host tournaments across different countries, particularly if those countries have significantly different playing conditions. Not that Mexico should have hosted anyway, having already hosted two World Cups in the modern era. And I say that as a Mexican novelty mascot myself! [Post edited 3 Jul 9:34]

The FA will be doing what ever it can and whatever expense to give us the best chance, but that doesn't necessarily make Tuchel's comments any less valid. Its a massive disadvantage compared to a Mexico side who have thus far been living at that altitude and played every game in their home stadium. That's not being salty or resenting their home advantage, its just the facts. Hopefully it can give us an extra little bit of motivation, a bit of a sense of injustice.

Surely if they were to play in Mexico as hosts they should be made to play in one of the other Mexican stadiums. I know capacity an issue, but if its about capacity play in USA. Given the expected hotel disruption too for players resting/sleeping and the alleged cartel threats Ecuadorian players had about their families, things could be heavily stacked against England before we even look at our form with the exception of HK and JB.
