how you measure inequality is obviously a matter of debate. there are lots of alternative stats. if you take a distribution and try to summarise it with a single headline measure then that drops out lots of information. there is an awful lot going on beneath something like a gini coefficient.
but even the thiel index doesn't show any systematic change since the mid 90s. it is now below where it was in 2000. we're broadly still where we were then. both measures show inequality rising in the 80s - but neither implies that is it rising in the recent period. the best you could say is that since the 80s / 90s there is absolutely no clear pattern. the problem with absolute measures has already been discussed in the thread - they can be distorted by changing prices.
yes, measuring inequality is open to serious debate, but if this article reflects the best effort to find rising inequality using the measures that are most likely to show it, it doesn't achieve that post the mid-1990s. there isn't evidence here, even with the best efforts to find it, that uk inequality us currently rising.
my point in the thread is that people confidently assert 'in the uk inequality is rising' almost as an article of faith, but that isn't backed up by evidence. it's politically what people want to see, rather than having any evidence base. it may be that people think the uk is just like the us, or it may just be confirmation bias of some sort.

Man resorts to jargonism in further proof he has nothing to say!
"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."
Although I agree with a reasonable amount of what Gary says, he definitely has some character flaws. I remember posting on here after reading his book that he didn't come across very well at certain points which disappointed me.
Although Gary never actually says anything like it, I thought his dad was going to be a bit of a pr1ck but he seemed like a nice normal bloke.
There is definitely something a bit strange about the story. Overall I remain a fan but it has just occurred to me this might be based on the Rich Dad, Poor Dad story by the (horrendously arrogant) Robert Kiyosaki.

It's not just the character flaws. It's the throwing around of accusations or pretend expertise in things he knows to little about.
I think he might have been 'edgy' to some, but he's from the gutter of online content in the same way as many these days. I make Konstantin correct on this one, it's not so much him, but what he says.

Interesting watch. A good critique of his economic knowledge
Isn’t this the guy who reckons you can’t be English if you’ve got coloured skin or are not Christian? The one who hit fame by racially attacking Sunak? He’s not qualified to talk about economics either from what I can see.

you can't say that about 'the best inequality economist in the country' (copyright g. stevenson.)

I think he was saying that Sunak can't be English, but can be British. Trying to make a distinction between ethnicity and nationality. I don't subscribe to it being a racial attack particularly as he made the comparison to himself.
Dangerous territory to comment on though.
What were the economic points you disagreed on?

I did actually watch the doc and tried to approach with as open a mind as possible, albeit anybody who's read this thread knows my thoughts on him.
I think for a lot of people who watched it though, and in general, it's beginning to dawn on them that a lot of his arguments aren't particularly coherent nor stand up to much scrutiny.
He correctly identifies two trends: rising wealth inequality (i.e. the top 10% now own more share of the wealth) and stagnating living standards. But is unable to convincingly demonstrates that one caused the other, primarily due to the fact they're distinct issues with very different drivers.
Given he commissioned it and had a hand in directing it no doubt, you wonder how bad the things that didn't make the edit were...

I don't know if I buy into this ethnicity v nationality distinction of being British or English, but his long form interviews are very good. I do think he tries to interview across the spectrum of thoughts and ideas with people like Aaron Bastani, Richard Dawkins, Nigel Degrease Tyson and Douglas Murray being excellent examples.
The one recently aired with Alistair Campbell was good too.
He will probably interview Stevenson at some point

again, sorry to be boring, but this is simply not true in recent periods.
I don't know why people refuse to see this data -perhaps they think britain is america. what you have said is simply not true in the last 20 years.

No great rises in inequality since the 1980s.
'Austerity' had no impact whatsoever
the rise in inequality continued into the 1990s. after the mid to late 90s it has been at worse flat.

But I have a feeling this data relates only to income because it talks about housing costs.

yes, thatcher's reforms and de-industrialisation increased inequality in the uk after a long and major post war fall. since the mid 90-s there has been at worse no change.
in recent years there has been large increases in inequality in america, but not in the uk. i suspect some people confuse the two.

Because, as I already told you, I would suspect the dip post peak in 2016 is almost entirely down to falling house prices post Brexit.
Which is meaningless if you didn’t sell your house in that time.
Meanwhile other assets, like stocks, wine, cars etc etc all ballooned meaning your ability to spend or the so called wealth effect has risen despite your net worth going down in aggregate.

Your point 5 is correct and is annoying.
Keeps saying he’s an economist - he’s really not.
He’s no more an economist than someone who studied medicine and now does something completely different is a doctor.
A masters from Oxford in Economics isn't an economist? He specialises in wealth distribution and inequality too, its his area of specialisation. Is it because hes not employed as an economist that hes not one? He has made the point many times that the best economists become traders because they know they can earn and take advantage of their knowledge more.

the data is there in the link i posted. if you just take the top decile share of 'physical wealth', which is likely to be dominated by property, there is almost no change over the period.
if you take the top decile share of financial wealth it rises in the middle of the period, but is then lower at the end than it was at the start.
