That Q’s not aimed at me, but isn’t is pretty obvious what the downsides of wealth accumulation by the few and widening inequality?

A few of the main issues:
- it removes money from circulation and encourages hoarding of assets and savings (no ‘trickle down’)
- can tie up stock and drive up prices of large assets like houses
- it buys political influence (£5M donation anyone?; the likes of Aaron Banks, Peter Hargreaves and the JCB Bamford bloke funding Brexit which removed rights and opportunities from us all and made the country and plenty of businesses and individuals poorer).
- extreme wealth and market capture by huge corporations can lead to wage suppression and poorer working conditions (e.g. Amazon a known poor employer).
- by reducing economic mobility, the concentration of wealth in the few, helps drive increasing poverty. The wider implications of poverty affect all of us through the strain on the welfare state through to poor health outcomes and increased NHS demand.

Political influence may be the largest problem. Look at the damage the Eton class have done as MPs and how lobbying by rich individuals and ‘think tanks’ bankrolled by rich individuals has done to the UK. Or Musk and Trump in the US. These people would be nowhere near power if we lived in anything vaguely resembling a meritocracy.

I would agree with you about Musk and have very grave concerns about what's happening in silicon valley and the trillionaire tech bro class - however, the point of this thread, and young Gary, is about taxing people in the UK who have wealth >£10m.

Which is not the same thing as deciding how to tackle the influence of the top 0.000000001% in the US, which is a handful of people in the tech sector for the most part.

I won't go through your list one by one but just the top couple of points;

1) What money is being remove from circulation and what assets are being hoarded?

2) House prices we've done to death in this thread but worth noting, house prices haven't even kept pace with inflation in this country for a long time and are now declining in London (which is where the biggest concentration of wealth is).

So which assets are being driven up and kept out of circulation so you can't buy them?

You, and the people that take what Gary says at face value, are being kidded into thinking that the reason people at the top own more now vs. the rest is because they're busy hoarding assets which you or I could otherwise own.

Whereas the differential is almost entirely explained by the fact asset prices, of the things they already owned, have ballooned since 2008, while real wage growth has basically stagnated.

'A rentier economy (or rentier capitalism) is a system where wealth and income are generated by controlling scarce assets like real estate, patents, or digital platforms, rather than by producing new goods or services. Income is extracted as "rent," interest, or royalties, often leading to severe wealth inequality and market monopolies.A "rentier" is any economic actor who earns income from owning or controlling assets without actively producing or adding new value to the economy. This model represents a shift from productive, competitive capitalism to a system dominated by extraction and monopolistic power.'

....this sounds a little like what you do?

You and my job

You're absolutely obsessed - living in your head rent free.

I realise this is a difficult time for you now even the Guardian has seen that Gary has no clothes and that once again Zack has shown himself to be a bit of a berk (at best...) but no need to have a pop at me!

Makes you look pathetic and envious that you keep raising it.

As I said at the time - given it was a puff piece that he had majority editorial control over you’d think - you do rather wonder how bad the stuff that didn’t make the edit was…

More tellingly, you would think that someone whose specialist subject is a wealth tax and who has a doctorate in economics would be prepped to counter the fairly obvious points put to him.

Maybe it just shows the dangers, and lack of intellectual rigour, of preaching (through YouTube) to the converted.

My particular highlight was when that eccentric and somewhat mad Fulford chap gave him a rebuttal as to why he should have to sell his farm, Gary said something along the lines of:

"yeah but I want all children to have the opportunity to go into farming"
