| Happy Birthday, Ray! 11:46 - Jul 13 with 1016 views | IWBlue | The great Ray Crawford is 90 years old today! My hero as a boy growing up following the Town. Happy Birthday, Ray! | | | | |

No. John Compton (left back) and Andy Nelson (centre-half, and, I think, captain) are still with us. EDIT I gather from post below that Doug (Dixie) Moran can be added to the list. [Post edited 13 Jul 18:10]

I got scared, but then saw the caption and realised it was his birthday. What a legend. 🎂 The only British man to score five goals in a European Cup match.

As far as I am aware, as well as Ray, Doug Moran (91), Andy Nelson (91) and John Compton (88) are still with us from the Championship winning team. Doug is 92 at the end of this month and as far as I know he is the oldest living former ITFC player (unless anyone knows differently!).
| Happy Birthday, Ray! on 17:19 - Jul 13 with 728 views | jungleboy | Not only did Ray score the goals that won us the league in 1962 but he did the same to get us promoted back up in 1968, and that led to the Robson era. Without a doubt, Ray Crawford is the most important player to ever play for the Town! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

What was his style of play - did he have real pace? And why on earth did we sell him to Wolves in September 1963, when we didn't have an obvious replacement? Maybe the £55,000 fee (a record for Wolves) had something to do with it.

I wondered if he got a cut of the £55,000 but Google AI tells me that was not allowed at the time, however: 'Instead of receiving a cut of the £55,000, Crawford's compensation for the move came in the form of his new contract with Wolves, which provided him with better personal terms and a weekly wage, alongside standard signing-on practices typical of that era.' He also got to move himself and family away from that snotty kid three doors away who ended up spending way too much time on the TWTD forum...

At some stage in the 1960s, footballers got 5% of a transfer fee as long as they hadn't formally requested a transfer. I don't know if signing-on fees, which began after the 1963 "retain & transfer" court case, were in addition to this, but they certainly became a feature as well. Maybe Crawford had seen which way Town were heading & wanted to make some money as Town wouldn't have been paying top wages.

Indeed, he was living in a modest three bedroomed semi in Castle Hill and didn't own it as it was one of the Club's houses and later occupied by Colin Harper.
