If it's for a one off game and they are at their peak then from the last 50 it's Gazza and it's not even close. Too disruptive to be part of the squad across a long campaign, but peak Gazza is the best player to pull on an England shirt in my lifetime.
The only other player who I would consider if you could guarantee their best would be John Barnes. A better crosser than Beckham and much more skillful. His 25 minute sub appearance in the England vs Argentina 86 game almost clawed us back after Maradona's two goals. Sadly he would play 9 anonymous games for every good game when he pulled on an England shirt. But his club form for Liverpool in the late 80s was imperious. | | | |
