Top 15 is hardly a boast is it ffs? We are talking about reffing one of the absolute elite games in global football here. A WC semi final with two teams who don't really like each other much.
I have seen a reasonable amount of MLS, not loads but probably just as much as the casual fan, and even seen a couple of games live in NYC.

Factually speaking it's not a pub league if you want to be pedantic. But clearly "pub league" is just a colloquialism for not a particularly good league. Which it isn't.
I also think optically, given the various things that have surrounded FIFA, even pre dating the actual start of the tournament by clearing Ronaldo to play - optically it looks a bit silly to give us a MLS ref for a game involving Messi, who as mentioned is the poster child for American soccer.
Why would anybody deliberately open themselves up to scrutiny like that unless there's an agenda? Even if you only believe that agenda to be that they are giving an American ref a big game because they're the host.

He never had control of the game, let Argentina get away with their darks arts, the first person he booked was an England player which was frankly absurd, and VAR checks for simple mistakes (Alvarez blasting it into the side netting and a corner being awarded??) seemed to not be happening in this game.
