I think this is slightly outdated thinking re fees.
It's fairly well known now that with free agents you are paying well over the odds on salary/ signing bonus to make up for the lack of a fee.

As far as I'm aware, discussions were still ongoing, presumably with the deal being discussed mitigating for an ongoing issue, as in being paid so much if he makes x number of appearances, more if he were to make more, that kind of thing. Evidently, Hull have made an offer. Presumably he'll have similar tests there.

Lots of players have injury issues which come up in medicals. One I remember was Alan Lee had a knee issue which meant Town couldn't get him insured at all. But as he'd only cost c£200,000 Joe Royle persuaded the club to do the deal anyway.

Which turned out to be caused by one leg being longer than the other and him having to wear an insole in his boot !

Doubt there is any link between the Morita and maeda deals other than they both happen to be Japanese. Never played together at club level, different age groups when growing up

Am told that he had a medical at the end of last week and something emerged which was of concern, hence a return to discussions with him over the weekend/early this week. Otherwise, I think the deal was all but done.

All a bit baffling, some saying he didn't have a medical, some saying he did but failed, others saying it happened but a few issues arose.

Similar thing with Broja a couple of years back wasn't it? A deal was all but done, an issue came up in the medical and we wanted to renegotiate. Chelsea were not having it and he ended up going to Everton on deadline day - when they were quite desperate and prepared to take a risk. It didn't work out for them!
And on the other side of it, Brentford weren't prepared to take the risk on Cajuste after a medical but we were.

Fair Enough, don't think we can't really afford to take risks, well, all signings are a risk to a degree, but if there has been an issue then I can see why we wouldn't be overly keen to commit.

Indeed, and with Azon last summer. He flew back, the deal was renegotiated and he returned.
