Today is the day that online folk think that something very weird will happen. Apparently at 15:33 today the earth gravity is going to stop for seven seconds and everything will float up. Once it has finished everything crashes back down.

That serious organisations have to spend time and money publicly debunking this nonsense is a really sad indictment of where some elements of some societies have got to.

On a serious note, I haven't even recovered my chair cover that was lost in a storm a few months back - I'll never get all the house and garden contents that will have gone hundreds of feet in the air back when this happens.

I'm interested in how gravity is going to 'disengage' (presumably pretty much instantaneously) for 7 seconds, then start again. What is the mechanic for this happening?

I know gravity is an area where we still have a lot to understand, but this is, so far as I'm aware, an event unprecedented in the entire history of the known universe. For gravity to just "stop", for no apparent reason, then to start again. It's not like a machine which can suffer a power interruption, it's a basic principle of physics.

Besides which, their casualty figures are way out. Everyone would die. There would be no walls or ceilings to slam into. The planet would, at least temporarily, disintegrate. The atmosphere would go, too. At best, there would be a molten blob left afterwards, with billions of tons of debris plunging back into the surface.

NASA are going to turn it off and on again. it just takes a few seconds to reboot.
