"Jason has been able to build something that's really suited to our specific needs. It’s not just for player recruitment. We used it to identify the manager and staff this summer. It's for analysis and performance too
"When Gary was shown it, he said it was beyond anything he'd seen at Liverpool and Bournemouth. We're proud of it."
He continues: "People see the film Moneyball and think that's how you use data to recruit players in football. It just doesn't work like that. There's always a balance between the objective and the subjective. We'd never sign a player just off a set of numbers."
The Arizona firefighters' pension fund that underpinned back-to-back promotions from League One may no longer hold majority stakes in Ipswich Town, but their cultural message - 'running towards adversity' - remains at the club's core.
The mantra, still printed on the shirts and within the dressing room, urges players to take on challenges head first and perform under pressure for their people, just as brave first responders do.
"They new players have all had the (Jason Schechterle) conversation," says Ashton.
"Jason will be here in September once the window’s shut. Once we've got the new squad together they'll go through a formal presentation with Jason on what ‘running towards adversity’ means.
"As long as I'm here, that won't change. It's the fundamental core values that we work towards. And I think, thus far, that's kept us grounded." |  |

I think one of the most moving things I've seen was in Manhattan, on the wall of a fire-station. There were small plaques, no bigger than a standard envelope, each commemorating a firefighter who'd died in the service of NYC. These dated back to the 19th century, '- lots of Irish and Italian names. When it got to 9/11, there were a lot more plaques, - just the same modest memorials as the ones that had come before. |  | | |

I think Jason himself wants to use the slogan for people to take strength and honour from what the firefighters do. To represent the team and the fans and the owners. To not baulk at playing at Old Trafford and Liverpool. As in the history of our club, to go towards the challenge, to take it head on and look at what a win looks like. 🤜 |  |
