Half the wells in our village here in Bohemia are empty. There is no water main here. Fortunately, our own borehole is a bit deeper, but the water is getting cloudy. Scary stuff, especially as I have no idea how long it takes an aquifer to be replenished even when it does start raining again. You might see me on Google Maps weeing in the garden and having my daily wash from a washing-up bowl. |  | | |

We have a stream on the edge of our property.
As the owner of the land under the stream, we have the right to abstract a maximum of 20,000 litres of water from it per day, although I think it would be a struggle to extract that much.
As it is, we only water the plants we have in a few pots because the bushes etc look after themselves (at least before this summer) and a watering can/butt does the trick for the plants during a hosepipe ban. But the previous owner had a pump with a very long hose, presumably because he wanted the garden, including the grass, to look tip top even when there was a drought.
For a time I used the pump to drain an area that used to flood but the pump broke and I threw away the hose that went with it..
If droughts are to become a thing, maybe I will need to invest in a new one, if only to save trees or bushes at risk of dying. [Post edited 16 Aug 15:08]

We take water for granted. I can imagine that experiencing your well slowly dry up is a good antidote to that! |  |
