Just a query as I can’t seem to get my head around it … the US PGA tour is in the playoff period ?
In the old days and I think still in Europe the winner of the years title was the player who amassed the most points/money over the season…. Think Monty in the 90’s.
It seems to me that isn’t necessarily the case these days in the states..it seems that you can win the years title “just” by winning the 30 player playoff final even if you finished 15th say in the season.
I suppose this is a bit like the rugby league here super league… win the season table but 4th in the table wins the playoffs and they are the champions for the season ? Am I getting this right it seems a little silly ? [Post edited 17 Aug 17:45]

I think Scheffler complained about this last year. It used to be calculated over the years performance and whoever had performed the best over the year won the Fed Ex Cup. Recently, they got the best player of the year up until the last tournament to start the last tournament on 10 under par. 2nd best 8 under 3rd best 6 under and so on. This gave the best player a slightly better chance of winning that tournament and also the Fed Ex cup.
Last year Fleetwood won that tournament and was therefore crowned the years best player. So Scheffler must have been miffed. I don't think they've changed it for this year also. I might stand to be corrected though. |  | | |

Yes that does seem to confirm what I was thinking,cheers for that.
So an example (extreme granted) would be F1 .. Lewis Hamilton 200 points ahead of 2nd place over the season…the last race with the only the top 10 taking part, 9th in the rankings Jonny Herbert wins the one off race at … Qatar and he is crowned world champion.
I can understand the Scheffler miff.
I remember yeeaaaaaaars ago in speedway there was a call for a Grand Prix type series after Egon Muller an unheralded German won the world championship which in those days was a one off event… they did get a series about a decade later. | |

However, then the biggest names like Mickelson & Woods begun to skip the event, Tiger having already clinched the #1 slot in 2006. An event without the 2 biggest names was unsaleable to the public so they came up with the convoluted & frequently changed FedEx Cup, where the top 30 still played the last event but someone would win the last event but not be Tour Champion. While getting FedEx to throw obscene bonuses at the top players meant most of them showed up, the convoluted format didn't sell well so now it's a huge money fest for the (already very rich) top 30, with the winner trousering $10m, plus bonuses for all the others just for turning up. |  |

A lot of golf fans don't pay huge attention to the run of the mill tournaments & like you, make a point of watching the Majors & the Ryder Cup. There must still be enough eyeballs in the US, though, to justify the huge payouts. | |

Yes, there’s no doubt there are … the golf channel even existing back in the 90’s and their culture over there and how golf fits into it is different to the UK so I can see it. [Post edited 17 Aug 20:10]
