The summer business in 2024 never really convinced me, in terms of being enough of a step up in quality or in terms of the physical attributes needed. My West Ham supporting mate laughed when we got Phillips, and said he looked miles off it there, so there was a decent health warning there too. Generally we just had nothing like the level of Premier league ready players we needed
Just feels like we've got a better profile of player through the doors this summer, to give us a fighting chance.
It'll still be a tough season though, and I'll be delighted if we scrape 17th. |  |

It'll be interesting to see what GON has planned fir Enciso. He was an AM/winger fir us last time, but looked a decent option as the lone forward fir Paraguay at the world cup. | |

I’m much less confident. But that was because I was stupidly confident last time based around a huge misreading of the gap between the PL and the Champ.

Agree. Think some experience with a level of youth is what was needed. I would like some defensive starters come in and of course we all want another striker. I'm happy and hope the new manager can get a tune out of them. |  |

Hey Dubster - couldn’t agree more, this feels a different crop of players in terms of readiness for the Prem. Lukic, Diop, OShea, Diop, Florentino, Fatawu, Maeda all in for the first game… hell even maybe Enciso… versus (although I love them dearly) Wolfie, Chappers, Morsy, Luongo
Do think this is also a huge chance for Davis to prove himself and step up
I do also think this ‘vertical football’ system rather than full reliance on the double pivot makes us more likely to prosper at this level [Post edited 17 Aug 19:36]

The starting lineup last time was frankly quite embarrassing. We’d come too far too quickly and it showed. No disrespect to any of the lads and the fact we went for 60 mins or so toe to toe against Liverpool on the opening day says a lot about their heart. But we were miles off.
It is shaping up a bit better this time, but I’m still only cautiously optimistic. It’s a brutally unforgiving league. |  |

Pretty much how I feel.
Looking back we were very much looking to the likes of Phillips & Cajuste to give us a bit of Prem experience. Now we have in spadefuls what those two were supposed to give us, and they actually wouldn't get a look in here.

Agreed, pretty much ideal qualities to lead the press. Will run and run forever but has technical ability too. I don't think Emersonn is nailed on to start every game, so can definitely see Enciso starting there sometimes, maybe more away games to give us more of a threat on the counter. |  |

Im not going as far as to say more confident this time because we saw how large the gap was last time. However i really like the business we have done and are doing. Im less concerned about a trophy striker (i would always take a trophy striker) partly because im not sure one exists at the level we are at. I am concerned about midfield, im not sold on Nunez having the time to develop into a PL player as the third/fourth choice and it would be great to have one other in there better than Nunez or Taylor. I also have a real concern about our ability to cover Leif in the event of injury or any time out, eveyone else is a backup secondary position only for that role. The unknown quantity is how effective AO can be covering that position or what he might offer as a starter over on the RB position. |  |

I really really like the business we've done.
I think GON was an astute choice and is astute himself.
I think Diop is the most important signing.
I think we've got a really nicely balanced squad emerging to be solid but very aggressive in moments.
I don't see why we can't do better than survive.

Thing is, if we can defend well and get the ball back high up the pitch, we don't need so many goals. Sunderland got eleven 0-0 or 1-1 draws last season, 4 of their 14 wins (nearly a third) were 1-0 or 0-1. 23 points from scoring one or fewer goals per game. |  |
