Appreciate this is about BBC Norfolk commentary but Suffolk could be affected… 11:27 - Aug 19 with 3190 viewsSitfcB

…as it says in the story all local radio will go the same way if it goes ahead.

Scrapping away team coverage for away games and the output will just come from the home commentary team.

Would be a disgrace if they went through with it IMO.

I'm amazed it's still going for any club to be honest. Is Brenner still doing BBC Suffolk coverage? Sad if it does go, but surely every professional team has their own commentary that they charge for anyway, I mean we can either sign-up and pay £5.99 a month, or pay £44ish for a years membership and get that for 'free'.

I blame the thousands/hundreds of thousands who refuse to pay the license fee...there'll be nothing left soon, just news and Strictly/Traitors.

Poll: So what do we think will happen with MM and the Aston Villa job?

While I understand why they did it, it's a bit of a shame that TownTV doesn't use Radio Suffolk for the radio commentary. While the commentary is ever improving, it often feels like a bit of a half-way house - a bit too much commentary for watching on TV and not quite descriptive enough for radio commentary.

Yet the BBC remains happy to pay Alan Shearer £400k / year, that's more ridiculous.

Goodness knows how much they're spending on ever increasing, mediocre pundits.

Speaking of MOTD Ashley Young has been signed up as a pundit for it in a ‘now and again’ role.

Because the Beeb would then own part of the rights to the coverage they were producing, and the club was charging people for...

Its just simpler for the club to keep it all in house.

In anycase I thought we'd moved well beyond proper radio commentary thesedays, which is why the likes of TMS is so hard to listen to now.

Would be awful if true. I can sort of understand it for areas like Lancashire and Sheffield where they are sending multiple commentary teams out every weekend but surely Suffolk and Norfolk have the budgets to provide coverage to one club.

Also we are both lucky that Brenner and Chris Goreham are actually really good commentators. I've had the misfortune to listen to some games on other stations, Radio Berkshire in particular when the commentators really aren't good.

Of course but thats never been the Beebs way theyd rather claim the license fee isnt enough than for a second say actually Shearer mate you're not worth 400k for what you do.

And they've always cut local radio or local news instead of dealing with their 'talent' costs

Even though their entire presence in local radio is simply there to block commercial radio stations who could offer the same service ,but cant operate with the audience numbers theyd pull trying to compete with the Beeb because the Beeb regardless draws people in simply be being the Beeb.

But classic Beeb of course at our first Prem game there will be MotD, Radio 5, Radio Suffolk, BBC sport if not covering the game direclty will be providing the online coverage, BBC local news for both Sunderland and us, likely BBC Tyne & wear sport too.

How many BBC journalists does it take to cover 1 game ?, then multiply it across all the Premier league games, add in the producers and techies that make it work.

No wonder we need 250 press seats

Yeah they could cut to the local commentators for updates on 5 Live really and not send another body to the games.

Back in the day of 70s and 80s live commentary was very rare ,just a few a season and just for the big games .On Radio Orwell when a playing a record they would interrupt with their GOAL ACTION jingle and you had no idea if was Town or the opposition had scored until they went over to Bryan Knights ,brilliant times !

Why should people pay a license fee? Potentially for something they do not watch.
In this day and age why can't they operate the same as Sky, Virgin etc ?

Awful news if true.

I’ve listened to away commentary my whole life ( when I didn’t actually go away)

No one can forget the famous Brian Knights commentary, Terrible news for Brenner and the team

That would be a real shame.

Whilst I don't live in Suffolk and so can't pick up match commentary, and go to most games home and away anyway, I really enjoy listening to the post-match programme on the way back from games which is available on BBC Sounds.

The BBC gets lower week by week.
They do crude cuts rather than examine their working practices.
e.g.
BBC Suffolk morning show has one presenter and two (yes two) producers !!!
They have an inane coffee morning amongst themselves. Easy two person cut.

MOTD has double commentators with footballer offering little insight.
Ken Wolstenholme, Barry Davies, John Motson flew solo. Worth a try?
Reduce analysts (3+ Pitch side analysts 3+ Studio analysts) Over manning ?

May also be worth looking at big budget BBC outside broadcasts like European games. They gave up the Commonwealth games so maybe these as well or pay to view on another BBC platform for the few that are interested.

Lots of BBC Suffolk content is Norfolk or UK focussed so taking away Bremmer and co seems like the last knockings of "local" BBC Suffolk.

Because the BBC is a national institution providing trustworthy news in an age of growing and dangerous disinformation. £15 a month for the TV channels, iPlayer, radio stations, websites and news app is excellent value in my opinion. No advertising either.

Some of us have never had it, despite paying the licence fee every year.

Sheer, illogical, ridiculous discrimination against those living out of range in far-flung places like Birmingham and Leeds
