Social media companies have some responsibility, but my actuarial life means I have to put it out there that the accident hump (a peak in mortality between ages 16-25) existed well before social media As ever, it's not straightforward as to where the responsibility sits. we've always had joyriders, difference is they're now being encouraged and monetised for clicks by rich and powerful social media owners with zero accountability

Just replying to my own post (a bit lame I know), but some research links the start of smart phone use to an increase in the mortality spike, but the effect of it is unclear. Whether it comes from issues like cyber bullying or increased risk taking isn't that well established. Often many more years of data would be needed as (fourntuately) mortality rates are still very low in this range. Lots of modern factors actually suggest the 'hump' is flattening out, as young people are more 'accident aware' than maybe before.

I don't really know much about the inner mechanics of social media. Are those clicks incentivised financially?

for a minority, yes - but the money per view is so small it has to be millions upon millions to be worth anything, monitisation of social media is more holistic than just āyou recieve X pounds for Y clicksā | | | | Login to get fewer ads

they can be, yes. many influencers and controversialists make very good money by doing so. just giving a wider platform of notoriety is a boon for the look-at-me types engaging in this kind of behaviour. previously they'd just be encouraged and looked up to by a very small circle of mates

Sometimes I wonder if people jump to quick solutions to things as a mechanism to counter the shock of what they see? I remember the hand gun ban after Dunblane. The UK has one of the lowest gun crime rates in the world, but there is no certainty if that's causal.

undoubtedly some young people will be seeking ācloutā - essentially social kudos for recieving a number of views/likes/whatever. Thereās no doubt that social media is inherently harming young people and their development, but just shared about the more holistic nature of monetisation, as itās not a simple as some will have you believe. Iāve a friend who recieves hundreds of thousands of views every month and makes an absolute pittance from it, however the sponsorships offered and other brand deals, mean that itās then a decent wage- albeit in a highly unpredictable market and ever changing landscape. I make a small amount of my wages from social media, but itās not paid out on views, itās companies paying me to make and/or collaborate social media posts on their behalf to advertise their products/games/books/events/etc - youāre talking anything between Ā£280 - Ā£500 a video after agent fee. But yeah, not a penny from views per say⦠[Post edited 24 Aug 15:58]

...how often some people's immediate reaction to things like this is to look for somewhere alternate to place the blame, or at best look for reasoning behind it. Usually these terrible things happen purely because some people are scum and the blame lies squarely at the feet of the perpetrators. That certainly appears to be the case in this instance.

the same article also says that saddington had several social media posts of joyriding. bit of a chicken and egg here, probably never be able to prove a causal link or an absence of a causal link. don't personally see the harm in removing posts like this from social media. reduce glorification of scummy behaviour where you can
