So what's the keeper plan? 06:16 - Aug 24 with 1772 views

Now that van Oevelen is joining Valencia on a season-long loan, what's the plan as obviously we'll need 3 senior keepers this season? Assuming there is no recall option on van Oevelen, a few options seem to be available:

Scherpen, Walton + Palmer (deregister Button)
Scherpen, Walton + Button (sell Palmer)
Scherpen, Walton + new 3rd choice (deregister Button & sell Palmer)

If we sign a new 3rd choice keeper, this could be an U21 player (so not named in the 25 man squad) but would be too risky IMO.

It probably all hinges on external interest.Another club buying or loaning Walton or Palmer. We could potentially get van Oevelen back in January.

Scherpen, Walton + Woody Williamson (deregister Button)

The fact they never even announced David Button as having a new contract makes me feel he must be on some kind of player/ coach deal.

Add to that the last time he played a game of senior mens football was two years' ago.

Williamson (19) played National League South last season and has been a mainstay for the successful U21s team. He's a better use of resources than Button.

You would think that neither Walton nor Palmer would want to kick their heels as 3rd keeper for a season at their age. So one of them will go, either permanently or on loan.

I don't think we're so pushed for squad numbers that we can't carry 3 senior keepers.

The loan for van Oevelen and Button as a training-only keeper gets us down to 26 players, Al-Hamadi didn't get a squad number so gets us down to the 25 - so 1-in, 1-out for any transfers this week. Think there are 2 obvious candidates for the outs which would make room for another No.9 and Palacios (if we can get that one over the line).

I think it's unlikely we get a 'good' offer for either. Walton is about to be 31 and Palmer is 30 and most of the Championship GK trading has already happened.

I count 11 new no1s in that league this year. The only other five I can see maybe needing keepers are Millwall, West Brom, Pompey, Preston, Blackburn and most of them have started well.

We might get our money back on Palmer but Championship clubs aren't queing up to spend millions on keepers with no resale value.
